P0300 is random multiple misfire. If its been more then 3years since the last tune-up, do one. Usually it is caused by debris inside the distributor cap but could also be plugs wires, fuel and air filter.

Try cycling the ignition on and off three times, Turn the ignition to the run till the check engine light turns off on the dash and then turn it off and do it again three times to pressurize the fuel line. Then start it, your fuel filter may be dirt or the fuel check valve at the fuel pump may be bad making you loose your fuel prime. Start with replacing the fuel filter first and let me know if that helps and let me know if cycling the ignition to pressurize the fuel line helped.

There is also a fan relay near the battery on the drivers side.. Usually you will find a burnt wire and melted contact when you remove the plug from the relay also feel the wires by hand if one is getting hot the connection is poor....

Trac Off light and Cooling Fan running on my 2001 Chevy Cavalier

I had the same problem on my 2001 Sunfire (same car as the Cavalier-different branding) which I was able to fix successfully.

My symptoms were:
-Traction Control OFF light illuminated
-Cooling fan running even if engine cold and it was freezing outside (I also noticed that when the Traction light illuminated, the fan would then begin)
-Rough idle with black smoke when cold
-Poor fuel economy

I have a code reader which produced codes P0130 and P0171. These are error codes for the upstream oxygen sensor (the one under the hood).

I simply replaced the O2 sensor (it took me 10 minutes). I did not reset the check engine light after the repair as I wanted to see what the car would do on its own. The idle was much smoother with no smoke and the cooling fan stopped running unnecessarily. After 1/2 mile down the road, the Trac light went away and the system functioned normally. I tested this by trying to accelerate quickly up a snowy driveway. I also noticed that the acceleration and shifting (auto tranny) were smoother. I reset the check engine light. All is satisfactory.

What was happening to the car before the repair:

P0130 is usually for a bad O2 sensor and P0171 is the sensor detected that the motor was running too lean (but it actually wasn't-the sensor was essentially giving a false lean signal).
The rough idle, black smoke, and poor economy are due to running too rich. In my case, the sensor told the PCM (the car's computer) that the air/fuel mixture was too lean. In response, the computer said "OK, more gas!" That's why it ran rich. This was evidenced on the old O2 sensor as was completely caked with carbon from an excessively rich mixture. This further destroyed the performance of the O2 sensor.

I have a 1993 chev cavalier 2.2 engine. I start it when it's cold. Sometimes it cuts off and want start. After 10 min then it will start and run fine. Sometimes I start it and the engine kick back, like i...

Instead of listen to guesses , ( i will told it could be a fuel pump )
I was told it could be a fuel pump

Testing before replacing parts is the normal way to diagnose these type problem's Fuel pump pressure an flow testing , voltage drop test the electrical circuit . Plus viewing scan data with a scan tool !!!!

048 Engine Hard to Start or No Start Scan Data for Starting Problems

By the time you get done replacing parts ( an it still won't start ) It would have cost less at a qualified repair shop.

96 Cavalier continues to overheat and blow cold air through the vents. I replaced the thermostat and waterpump and that didn't fix the problem.

If you don't have any noticeable coolant leaks, you might want to check the fan or fans if you have 2, start car and when it starts to overheat check to see if the fan is working. good Luck.

2002 Chev Cavalier 2.2L Engine overheating

Did you let engine run from cold after refill, with rad cap off & heater on (not defrost) until the engine reached operating temperature and rad fan came on a few times? If not, try it, you may just have an air lock, provided your sure thermostat is correct one & back in correct way. Rev engine slightly every once in a while and hold it there for approx 10-20 seconds to help burp the air out & increase circulation to heater.

Wouldn't stay running when put in gear.

When you unplugged the Throttle Position Sensor you made the computer go into panic mode and try to compensate for the loss. The fan might be thinking your engine is idling so it needs more fan. Even after plugging it in it probably will ignore it. I would try removing, without zapping yourself, the positive cable off your battery and let it sit for a bit to reset it's internal memory. If that don't work you might need a dealer to do the reset or it means the sensor was going and is now gone. Hope that helps.
