Question about Cars & Trucks
Transmission not up shitfing has oil speedometer also stop working
This year is not a computer controlled transmission (except OD and torque converter lock up) so with these transmission symptoms the conclusion would be the ****** has failed. As far as the speedometer goes it may be a broken cable or if electronic a defective speed sensor..

SOURCE: 1999 ford taurus transmission
Your problem is the speed sensor. The VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
is located on the right side of the transaxle, near where the right side axle shaft
connects to. To access this part is pretty tricky, if you are inexperienced. There
is an aluminum foil covered shield around the wiring connector. You will need to
remove the shield to gain access. You may even have a damaged wiring
connector, that is causing the problem due to the close proximity of this part to
the catalytic converter. If you want to purchase this part from the Ford dealer,
ask the parts counter person for the "basic" part number 9E731. Hope this helps.

when we dropped in the transmission we pinched the wire foe the speedometer
we fixed this wire and now the speedo works and the car shifts great.

replace the input and output transmission speed sensors, they run about $20 a piece you will need a 1" deepwell socket to easily replace these. It took me about 45min or so without deepwell sockets but would have taken about 20min with them.

This same thing happened to my daughter,s car, and it ended up being fixed with a transmission speed sensor. This sensor not only runs the speedometer, it helps tell the transmission when to shift too.
