ok was we are going to have to set the hole timing .you know there is 2 marks on the harmonic balancer.you are you going to pull the number 1 spark plug out ,and get a pencil.stick the pencil in the hole of number 1 ,but do not let it go.turn the motor by the harmonic balanceruntil the pencil pushes out. on the harmonic balancer there 2 marks .the second one is about an inch away from the first one that is the one to use for top tdc.once you get that look at the rotor in the distributor i am here too help

Update: last night I borrowed a timing light and of course the bulb blew... i replaced all of the sparkplugs incase they had fuel damage. I redid the timing with 1 at TDC. Still no progess. Still getting same two codes and still running rough. Checked the rotor inside of the distributor and it was still lined up. Are both the 1 and 4 sopposed to be at TDC togethor?

I was digging online and found a ton of complaints and wriings on the 4.3 GM motor ,and everyone said tha the motor ran fine before timing chain was replaced or the head gaskets was done. it all came down to the distributor being off 1 notch or a hair off. that is the problem I am having with the gold blazer after I rebuilt the motor.set the timing and move the distributor a teeth

SOURCE: 4.3 vortec runs OK cold, runs rough or dies warm

Your cylinder 4 misfire would most likely be a bad plug wire. And it is common for cars to have driveability problems with a crankshaft sensor code, esspecialy after the car has warmed up that is when you will notice the problem. The crank sensors are pretty simple to change and relativley inexpensive maybe around 40.00 for the part. If you look around the crank shaft pulley you will see a sensor with usually 2 bolts and a couple of wires attatched to it. If the vehicle gets to a point that it won't start, spin the motor over watching the tach on your dash and if it is not moving while cranking that means the sensor gave out. Good luck. swiftautorepairs.com

2007 Cadillac 3.6L srx, check engi, code p00017 crank sensor - replaced, still running rough and giving me a misfire on 1,3&5. Changed plugs, still 1,3&5 misfire - 155000 miles, could it need new coil

P0017 timing chain Chevy Colorado P0017 Case Study Part 1
155,000 miles This is not a DTC for the crank sensor . This is for variable valve timing .
DTC P0017: Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation Bank 1
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The CMP actuator solenoid signal from the ECM is pulse width modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the CMP actuator solenoid duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the CMP actuator solenoid. The ECM controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid state device called a driver. The ECM compares the camshaft position or the camshaft angle, to the position of the crankshaft.

Your a little out of your league on this ! Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop !

• Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, or timing chain can cause this DTC to set.
• An actuator that is in the full advance or retard position can cause this DTC to set.
• The presence of DTCs P0008 and P0009 along with P0016, P0017, P0018, and P0019 indicates a possible condition with the primary timing chain and the alignment between both intermediate sprockets and the crankshaft. Or, the crankshaft reluctor wheel has moved and is no longer referenced to top dead center (TDC).
• Observing the desired and actual camshaft angle parameters, with a scan tool before a DTC sets, may help to isolate whether a condition is specific to one camshaft, one bank, or caused by a condition with the primary crankshaft timing.

What does the cam sensor on a 01 malibu do

To answer the first question, "What does the cam sensor on a 01 Malibu do?": A cam sensor is actually a camshaft positioning sensor.

The Camshaft sensor determines which cylinder is firing to establish injector synchronization and coil firing sequence in DIS systems.

There is also a Crankshaft sensor which sets ignition timing, supply the RPM signal, and determines the engine speed.

The Camshaft Position sensor is typically located in the cylinder head of the engine and has a cylindrical portion that inserts into the head.

The Crankshaft Position sensor is normally located in the timing cover or on the side of the block with a cylindrical portion that inserts into the block.

You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankshaft_position_sensor

I would first check for any OBD codes- and based upon what the reader displays, work from there. You may also want to have a copy of your car's injector circuit and wiring diagram available; along with a troubleshooting and testing guide for same.

Here's a youtube link that gives you some idea regarding a car's injector system: http://youtu.be/JTCgUY51g0s

What does this code mean

Does the truck run ok? If so may just be bad sensor .it reads the correlation between cam and crank shafts so timing is correct so the camshaft control the valves and crankshaft controlling the pistons don't hit each other

I have a 2001 chevy blazer that shows MAS issues back fires in throttle body

the mass airflow sensor needs replaced, can't be cleaned, when its bad thats it. second, tried to replace crankshaft sensor ? did you ? if you did , it must be adjusted so its perfectly flush, parralell with crank, it reads magnetic strips that send info to computer, works together with camshaft sensor, cam & crank must be in time with each other, timing is everything, cause you don't have a distributor. reinspect your crank sensor to make sure its mounted correctly. replace your MAS, with exact replacement, not aftermarket, see how this works, I'll be around to help you
