Question about 2001 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

My 2001 beetle is over heating and abs light is on

She was running fine till yesterday morning . i just bought her 3 days ago we checked all fluids and everything was fine then yesterday on the way home the temp light came on went off then flashed twice a few minutes later when i finally got her home she was running hot. i did turn heat and fan on high when the light came on. it only takes about 20 minutes to get home so i dont think any severe damage was done. we've had many makes and models of cars but this is the 1st and probably the last bug! any insight would be great since i still have to pay for the car and refuse to be punked by a bug! also the abs light has been on since i got the car.

First is there anti freeze in the radiator. How hot did it get? you can have a stuck thermostat or a bad water pump, and or a hole in one of the coolant hose. check and see if the radiator is full,if it is not add water, and start the car,and wait. about 5 minutes see if the upper radiator is soft when squeezed if it is then thermostat is ok ,but if it is hard to squeeze you have a stuck thermostat. if the that is ok . you may have a bad water pump or even a radiator fan not working

Hi.
Check the heavy duty cables from the battery to the starter motor and solenoid and also the battery earthing (grounding?) - there terminals could be corroded / burned.

Hope this helps you a bit. If it does, a "Fixya" rating would be much appreciated. If it doesn't
help you, I'd be grateful if you didn't bother with a rating at all. Just come back and tell me what you found. Cheers, D

SOURCE: overheating problem

looks like you have done everything but the problem with your car is that the cylider head gasket has gone have a look at the dipstick or remove the oil filler cap if it looks like mayo then 100% head gasket has failed you said no water on the floor so it must have gone into engine only way this can happen is head gasket failing, if you have put lot of water in to the cooling system then your sump will be full of oil water mix.

let us know your findings so we can help you more if you need it

I had the same problem on my 2000 beetle and I had to change the water pump . Once you change the water pump you have to change the timing belt because the water pump is run by the timing belt .
you could know if it is the water pump by checking the hose that comes from the radiator to the enging to se if there is water running to the engine .

Ya still battling it . we flushed the tranny and it was fine for awhile but its just as bad if not worse. Volkswagon dealer gave me a huge run around and no answers. I thought i was getting stroked at $3500 for a new tranny but sounds like they realy want to nail you with $4500. No the catalytic replacement didnt fix the problem just a way to get more money out of me.
I didnt let the dealer replace the tranny and we drove it . it drives fine once its warmed up but first thing in the morning it slips. and it seems to be getting worse. I swung by a local shop not a dealer and he told me they have sensors . and may be a simple fix. but if not ya have to replace the tranny for its a sealed unit and they just cant be worked on. I regret buying it. let me know if ya find a solution. my e mail is fesup@q.com
