First thing was the timing moved. very easy .I do a lot of s 10 head gaskets. looking down at the harmonic balancer there will be 2 marks on it. the first 1 and about an inch away is the second one, you want to mark the second mark,and now pull the number one spark plug out . get a pencil ,and stick it on the spark plug hole,and hold on to it,and have some one turn the motor by the harmonic balancer. when the pencil starts to come out watch the marks and once you hit the second mark and the pencil is pushed out that is top dead center. make sure the battery is not hooked up. now look at the distribtor cap and get an idea where number 1 is and drop the distribtor down slow it takes a few tries

How do I set the timing in properly install my distributor on a 1994 Chevy 1500 4.3 the rotor got removed and not marked and the engine got turned over please help


The distributor will normally only go on way as the shaft is stepped or wedge shaped. Movement is only about 10 degrees and has stops so you can't go any further. The rotor in the distributor can only go one way and drops onto a peg.

Number 1 cylinder fires when the piston is a TDC (top dead centre) actually a few degrees before, when both the exhaust and inlet valves are closed on the compression stroke.

Hi Jerry,

Welcome to the club! Anybody who has never had this same problem has not worked much on cars! I say this because I have done the same thing several times.

Anyway, there are timing marks on the front crankshaft pulley and on the distributor. (see pictures)

You have to be sure that Number 1 piston is coming up on the compression stroke when you line up the mark on the front crank pulley with the indicator on the timing chain cover. To do this, remove the spark plug from #1cylinder and stick your finger in the hole. Have a helper "bump" the starter untill you feel the compression trying to push your finger out of the hole. Then use a wrench or socket on the crankshaft pulley bolts to get the marks lined up correctly.

If you look at the edge of your distributor with the cap removed, you will see two marks on the edge. One is an "8" and the other is a "6". when you drop the distributor into the hole, the distributor rotor needs to point directly at the "6" mark. (Since your Blazer is equipped with a 3.4L 6-Cyl. engine) (See Picture)

Sometimes the oil pump is not lined up properly to let the distributor drop all the way down in the correct position. There are two ways to handle this:

1. you can stick a LONG screwdriver down into the hole and try to rotate the oil pump into the correct position.

2. You can find the spot where the distributor WILL drop all the way down, then lift it back up and move it forward 1 tooth. the oil pump will also move 1 tooth and let the distributor drop again. Repeat this until the distributor drops into the proper position to get it lined up with the mark on the distributor.

nope 2003 models distributorless. the later models trucks had V6 engines with distributors.

I have a 2003 chevy S10 4.3L with an EDI ignition system. Do not have any spark coming out of the ignition coil to the distributor cap. Ignition coil is good electrically and ignition module checks out...


Well if the coil is good, the only thing it could be is the lead from the coil to the distributor cap, Take the lead out of the cap and place it on the engine block somewhere, But do not hold it on there whilst the key is turned, Get a friend to watch for a spark as you turn the key, if it sparks, There is something wrong with you distributor cap, if it doesn't spark then you could have problems with the electronic ingition

Pull the #1 spark plug tap engine over until you feel the stronger of the 2 puffs you will feel. weaker will be the exhaust stroke ,stronger will be the compression stroke.on the balancer line the mark up on the timing tab to zero.This is top dead center of the #1 cylinder,using your distributor cap index the rotor in the #1 position and drop distributor in.

I need to know the correct way to install a distributor on a 1998 chevy s-10 2wd pickup with a 4.3l vortec vin # w motor


pull out num 1 plug bring it up too compression stroke timing mark will be lined up with indicator on timing cover and harmontiac balancer drop in distributor rotor button is now pointing at num 1 plug wire,
start it up adj dist till it is running smooth!!!

Do you mean from the coil packs? 2003 malibu has no distributor. What engine do you have?
