Do i go left or right to loosen nut on crankshaft main gear

1987 fxlr I'm replaceing the belt and I'm not sheer how to loosen the main drive sprocket off the moter.

It's most likely right hand thread. You will have to use a large breaker bar to get enought leverage to remove this nut. Or you can use what ever you have and place a steel pipe on the end of it for extra leverage. If it doesn't budge, you may have to soak it in penetrating oil, and use an impact wrench. Make sure you remove the large washer under the nut "before" you remove pulley.

You have to leave all of the slack at the tensioner. Get the timing marks lined up on both of the cams and the crank. With the slack left at the tensioner, release the tensioner. It is okay if the marks move a little after this. Manually turn the engine crankshaft twice and then MAKE SURE THE MARKS LINE UP! If they do after two revolutions of the engine, you are good to go. This applies wether or not you are at DTC or not! Remember that!

Hello,

Yes, it's possible to change the seal after removing the balancer.
If the balancer shows signs of scratching, wear at the place of the seal, change that part too!

To remove the old seal, drill 2 small opposite holes in the seal flange ( there is metal in it ).
Screw 2 (parker) screws in the holes, so you can pull the seal out gently.
Grease the new seals' inner race, and put some sealant paste to the external race.
Push it back in place with a wooden piece ( drill a hole in the center for the crankshaft end )
Grease the outher race of the balancer. This will help the seal come gently into place.

  • Place the drain pan under the radiator drain plug, open the plug and allow it to drain. Close the plug. Loosen the four nuts on the water pump pulley but do not remove them yet. Loosen the adjusting bolts in the alternator and the power steering pump with a wrench, push them away from the belts and remove the belts.
  • 2Remove the bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator support using a 10 mm socket. Remove the four nuts on the water pump pulley, then remove the fan and shroud as an assembly. Remove the bolts in the crankshaft pulley using a socket. Loosen and remove the crankshaft bolt using a socket.

  • Remove the top radiator hose. Extract all the 10 mm bolts securing the top and bottom timing covers and remove the covers.
  • 4Install the crankshaft bolt temporarily. Use a socket on the bolt and turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft sprocket aligns with the timing mark on the block at the 12 o'clock position. Look at the camshaft sprockets and make sure the left sprocket has the "I" facing straight up and the right sprocket has the "E" facing up. At the same time, notice that there is a line on each sprocket adjacent to each mark--make sure they line up with the notch on the cylinder head at 12 o'clock. This allows for perfect alignment. If they do not come close to aligning, rotate the crankshaft one more time and they will align.
  • 5Loosen the tensioner bolt and push the tensioner away from the belt. Loosely tighten the bolt to maintain position. Remove the belt.
  • 6Install the new belt starting on the right side away from the tensioner. Keep all the tension on the right side. Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow it to apply tension on the belt. Do not tighten the bolt yet. Rotate the engine two turns clockwise and re-align the timing marks. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 35 foot-pounds.
  • 7Install the timing belt covers. Remove the crankshaft bolt and install the crankshaft pulley. Reinstall the bolt and tighten. Install the radiator shroud and fan as an assembly. Place the fan on the water pump pulley, install the four nuts loosely, install the bolts in the fan shroud and tighten.
  • 8Install the belts around the crank pulley, water pump pulley and alternator and pull the alternator up to tension the belt and tighten the bolts using a socket. Tighten the water pump pulley nuts using a wrench.
  • 9Install the belt on the power steering pump, pull the pump out to tension the belt and tighten the bolts. Install the upper radiator hose. Fill the radiator with antifreeze

    INSPECTION

    Inspect the belts for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately. It is always best to replace all drive belts at one time, as a preventive maintenance measure, during this service operation.


    CHECKING TENSION AND ADJUSTMENT

    See Figure 1
    The belt tension on most driven components is adjusted by moving the component (alternator, power steering pump etc.) within the range of a slotted bracket. Some brackets (toothed) use a rack and pinion mechanism which moves the alternator side-to-side to adjust the belt tension. With this configuration, no prying tools are required. On Quantum (except 5 cylinder) and Fox models, the air conditioner compressor drive belts are adjusted by varying the number of discs (shims) between the halves of the crankshaft pulley. Before adjusting the belt tension on any engine, look at the mounting and determine what kind of bracket is used.
    To check belt tension, push in on the drive belt about midway between the crankshaft pulley and the driven component. If the belt is less than 39.4 in. (1m) long, it should deflect between 0.80-0.120 in. (2-5mm). For longer belts, it should deflect between 0.40-0.060 in. (10-15mm). Belt size is usually printed on the back side of the belt. If it can't be read, it's probably time to replace it.

    1. Loosen the adjustment nut/bolt in the slotted bracket. Slightly loosen the pivot bolt.
    2. Pull (don't pry) the component outward to increase tension. Push inward to reduce tension. Tighten the adjusting nut/bolt and the pivot bolt.

Components, such as the power steering pump and some air conditioner compressors, may be mounted with a double slotted adjusting bracket using a threaded bolt and locknut to adjust and maintain tension. Loosen the locknut(s) and slightly loosen the bolt(s) in the slotted groove(s). Turn the threaded adjustment bolt(s) in or out to gain correct tension. Tighten locknut(s) and slotted bracket bolt(s).
    2. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

    1. Loosen the tension bolt and the alternator pivot bolt. These bolts should be loosened until the alternator swings freely under its own weight.

    1. Adjust the V-belt by turning the nut on the tension bolt while checking the belt deflection with your thumb.
    2. Once the proper tension is achieved, tighten the tension bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm). Tighten the pivot bolt to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    3. Recheck the drive belt tension, readjust if necessary.

    1. Remove the nuts/bolts securing the tensioner plate and crankshaft pulley halves.
    2. Add or remove the amount of spacer discs between the pulley halves until the belt tension is correct.

    If there are any shims left over, do not throw them away. On Fox and turbo diesel Quantum models, store the extra shims in front of the split pulley (behind the tensioner plate). On Quantums with 4 cylinder gas engines, store the extra shims behind the split pulley (in front of the crankshaft hub).

    1. Secure the pulley halves. Torque the pulley nuts or bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).


    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

    If a belt must be replaced, the driven unit must be loosened and moved to its extreme loosest position (usually by moving it toward the center of the motor). After removing the old belt, check the pulleys for dirt or built-up material which could affect belt contact. Carefully install the new belt, it may appear to be just a little too small to fit over the pulley flanges. Fit the belt over the largest pulley (usually the crankshaft pulley at the bottom center of the motor) first, then work on the smaller one(s). Gentle pressure in the direction of rotation is helpful. Some belts run around a third or idler pulley, which acts as an additional pivot in the belt's path. It may be possible to loosen the idler pulley as well as the main component, making your job much easier. Depending on which belt(s) you are changing, it may be necessary to loosen or remove other interfering belts to get at the one(s) you want. Some models have a front engine mount installed through the air conditioner compressor belt circle. Support the engine and remove the mount prior to belt removal and installation.
    When buying replacement belts, remember that the fit is critical according to the length of the belt, the width of the belt, the depth of the belt and the angle or profile of the V shape (always match up old belt with new belt if possible). The belt shape should exactly match the shape of the pulley; belts that are not an exact match can cause noise, slippage and premature failure.
    After the new belt is installed, adjust it for proper tension. This is sometimes a three or four-handed job; you may find an assistant helpful. Make sure that all the bolts you loosened are retightened and that any other loosened belts also have the correct tension. A new belt can be expected to stretch a bit after installation so be prepared to re-adjust your new belt.
    After installing a new belt, run the engine for about 5 minutes and then recheck the belt tension.

    Beside the pulley on the arm it is mounted on is a square hole. Place a 1/2 drive breaker bar in that hole and push to right or left. One way will looken the belt. It is a very heavy spring so don't do it till you have the belt to replace with.

    4cyl 2000 honda accord engine stalls while idling, recently died and will only start for short periods... possible problems/solutions?


    check for spark and fuel after it dies.

    If there is spark but no fuel, then the fuel pump may be bad or a clogged fuel filter.

    If there is fuel but not spark, then the ignition control module or the ignition coil could be bad.

    Also, check that the timing belt is timing the engine correctly.

    1. Record anti-theft code for radio.
    2. Disconnect battery negative cable then positive cable.

    5. Remove front tire assembly.
    6. Remove splash shield.
    7. Remove power steering belt.
    8. Remove alternator and alternator bracket.
    9. Safely support engine under oil pan.

    10. Remove stop, detach ground cable and remove upper bracket.
    11. Remove cylinder head cover.
    12. Remove upper cover.
    13. Remove dipstick and tube assembly.
    14. Remove crankshaft pulley.

    11. Tighten adjusting nut to 33 ft lb (44 Nm).

    16. Loosen adjuster nut 1 turn and ensure that belt tensioner freely moves.
    17. Push tensioner up and tighten adjusting nut.

    19. Using a 6 X 100 mm bolt, scribe a mark 2.9 in (74 mm) from end.
    20. Insert bolt into maintenance hole and hole in balancer shaft.

    29. Remove bolt from timing belt adjuster arm.
      NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.

    32. Install seal at adjusting nut.
      NOTE: Crankshaft pulley, bolt and washer must be cleaned prior to
      installation.

    33. Lubricate crankshaft pulley bolt between head and washer and bolt threads
      with clean engine oil.

    39. Install power steering pump belt and alternator belt.

    How to change the power steering belt on a 2004 mitsubishi galant


    The power steering belt is on the front of the motor and is driven by the crankshaft. Below the steering pump is an adjuster bolt. It moves a pulley underneath the pump. To adjust the belt tension located the nut that tightens the adjuster pulley the the pump bracket . It is on the right side of the bracket , the pulley is on the left facing the back of the car. Loosen the pulley mount nut . You can now turn the adjuster bolt to move the pulley to tighten and loosen the belt for replacement. I recommend replacing the alternator belt at the same time. To do this , Unhook the negative battery cable, loosen the bolt holding block to the slide arm, reach under the alternator and loosen the lower mount bolt, not you can adjust the position of the alternator using the adjuster bolt.

    To install:

    CAUTION Before installing the timing belt, confirm that the No. 1 cylinder is set at the TDC of the compression stroke.
    1. Remove both cylinder head covers and loosen all rocker arm shaft retaining bolts.
    The rocker arm shaft bolts MUST be loosened so that the correct belt tension can be obtained.
    1. Install the tensioner and the return spring. Using a hexagon wrench, turn the tensioner clockwise and temporarily tighten the lock-nut.
    2. Make sure that the timing belt is clean and free from oil or water.
    When installing the timing belt align the white lines on the belt with the punchmarks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Have the arrow on the timing belt pointing toward the front belt covers.

    A good way (although rather tedious!) to check for proper timing belt installation is to count the number of belt teeth between the timing marks. There are 133 teeth on the belt; there should be 40 teeth between the timing marks on the left and right side camshaft sprockets, and 43 teeth between the timing marks on the left side camshaft sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket.

    1. 1986-87 Engines:
      1. Using a hexagon wrench, loosen the tensioner lock bolt, set the tensioner and then slowly turn the tensioner clockwise and counterclockwise 2-3 times.If the coarse tensioner stud has been removed, be sure to apply locking sealer to the threads before installing it.
      2. Tighten the tensioner lock-nut to 32-43 ft. lbs. (43-58 Nm). Tighten the rocker arm shaft retaining bolts (in 2-3 stages) to 13-16 ft. lbs. (18-22 Nm).Before tightening, be sure to set the camshaft lobe at the position where the lobe is not lifted.
      3. Install the upper and lower timing belt covers.

    2. 1988 Engines:
      1. While keeping the tensioner steady, loosen the lock-nut with a hexagon wrench.
      2. Turn the tension approximately 70-80 degrees clockwise with the wrench and then tighten the lock-nut.
      3. Turn the crankshaft in a clockwise direction several times and then slowly set the No. 1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke.
      4. Apply 22 lbs. of pressure (push it in!) to the center span of the timing belt between the right side camshaft sprocket and the tensioner pulley and then loosen the tensioner lock-nut.
      5. Using a 0.0138 in. (0.35mm) feeler gauge (the actual width of the blade must be 1 / 2 in. thick!) positioned as shown in the illustration, turn the crankshaft clockwise ( slowly! ). The timing belt should move approximately 2 1 / 2 teeth. Tighten the tensioner lock-nut, turn the crankshaft slightly and remove the feeler gauge.
      6. Slowly rotate the crankshaft clockwise several more times and then set the No. 1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke.
      7. Install the upper and lower timing belt covers.

    How to tighten belt on 2004 nissan quest


    Best to remove the front passenger side wheel. Then snap out the clips that are holding the plastic cover towards the front. Now it will expose the belt area. Loosen the locking nut of the tensioner(idler) pulley located to the right of the Crankshaft Pulley. Crankshaft pulley is the one that handles both belts (alternator and the power sterring pump). Right to that next to it, upwards is the idler pulley. You will find the alternator pulley to the right of that further up. Open the hood of the van and locate the adjusting nut behind the alternator on the idler pulley from top and loosen that as well. Once both these are loosened, belt will loosen and will be easy to remove. Now replace it with the new belt the same way it was wrapped. Go over the crankshaft pulley; under the A/C compressor pulley; over the alternator pulley; under the idler pulley. tighten the adjusting nut from the top through the hood until the play on the belt (when pressed in) is less than 1 inch. Now lock the tensioner pulley by tightening the locking nut. Start and run the car for 15 mins to see if everything is ok.

    Hi, Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain coolant. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove A/C compressor drive belt idler pulley (tensioner) bolts, then idler pulley (tensioner). Remove upper radiator hose bracket bolt. Loosen two upper radiator hose clamps, then remove upper hose and bracket. Remove coolant bypass hose between thermostat housing and intake manifold coolant outlet. Disconnect main wiring harness from upper front cover (timing belt) cover, then remove eight upper timing belt cover bolts, then the upper cover, Fig. 20. Raise and support vehicle. Remove right front wheel and tire assembly and splash shield. Use strap wrench tool No. D85L-6000-A, or equivalent, to hold water pump pulley while removing water pump pulley bolts. Remove water pump pulley from water pump. Remove crankshaft pulley. Remove five lower timing belt cover attaching bolts and the cover. Rotate crankshaft in a clockwise direction to align crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks, Fig. 21. If timing belt is to be reused, mark direction of rotation. Loosen timing belt tensioner nut, then remove timing belt. CAUTION: With timing belt removed, avoid turning camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.

    13. Ensure that camshaft pulley "UP" mark is at top and grooves align with top of cylinder head.
    14. Remove crankshaft pulley and lower cover.
    15. Rotate crankshaft to TDC again and lock timing belt adjuster arm with a 6 mm timing cover bolt.
    16. Loosen adjuster nut 1 turn and ensure that belt tensioner freely moves.
    17. Push tensioner up and tighten adjusting nut. Balancer shaft alignment honda-03-23-3556.gif

    18. Remove bolt and washer from maintenance hole.
    19. Using a 6 X 100 mm bolt, scribe a mark 2.9 in (74 mm) from end.
    20. Insert bolt into maintenance hole and hole in balancer shaft.

    22. Align groove on balancer shaft with pointer on oil pump housing.
    23. Install balancer belt and loosen adjusting nut 1 turn to tension.
    24. Retighten bolt. Balancer shaft alignment honda-03-23-3556.gif

    25. Remove bolt from maintenance hole and install bolt and washer. Tighten to 22 ft lb (29 Nm).
    26. Reinstall crankshaft pulley.
    27. Loosen adjusting nut 1 turn.
    28. Rotate crankshaft pulley counterclockwise 1 turn and tighten adjusting nut.
    29. Remove bolt from timing belt adjuster arm. NOTE: Inspect rubber seal on lower cover and replace as necessary.
    30. Remove crankshaft pulley.
    31. Install lower cover.
    32. Install seal at adjusting nut. NOTE: Crankshaft pulley, bolt and washer must be cleaned prior to installation.
    33. Lubricate crankshaft pulley bolt between head and washer and bolt threads with clean engine oil. honda-03-23-3537.gif

      CAUTION
      Do not use impact wrench to perform following step.
    34. Install crankshaft pulley and tighten bolt using special tools to 181 ft lb (245 Nm).
    35. Install dipstick/tube assembly.
    36. Install upper cover. Tighten bolts to 9 ft lb (12 Nm).
    37. Install cylinder head cover.
    38. Install alternator bracket and alternator.
    39. Install power steering pump belt and alternator belt. Upper bracket installation honda-03-23-3420.gif

    40. Install upper bracket and tighten fasteners in proper numbered sequence.
    41. Install stop.
    42. Install battery and enter radio anti-theft code.

    How to install timing belt on 1998 vw beetle


    Instructions
    Things You'll Need: · Set of quarter-inch drive sockets Quarter-inch drive ratchet Set of half-inch drive sockets Half-inch drive air gun Set of metric wrenches Special tools for holding camshaft timing #2065-A and injection pump #2064

    Step 1

    Remove the accessory drive belts and the accessory drive belt tensioner. Remove the upper timing belt cover and the valve cover. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the No.1 cylinder is atop, dead center, with the flywheel timing marks aligned.

    Step 2

    Install the special tool setting bar (#2065-A) on the rear of the camshaft. If it does not fit, turn the crankshaft once more and line up the timing marks again in the hole of the transmission housing.

    Step 3

    Insert locking pin #2064 into the injection pump to hold it in position. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, the crankshaft pulley and the lower timing belt cover. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut and allow the tensioner to move away from the belt. Loosely tighten the nut to hold the tensioner out of the way. Remove the top guide pulley and the timing belt.

    Step 4

    Make sure that the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up and that the camshaft setting bar and injection locking pin are in place. Loosen the camshaft bolt a half turn and tap the sprocket with a soft mallet to loosen it off its taper. The sprocket should move freely. Install the top guide pulley and torque to 18 foot pounds of torque.

    Step 5

    Install the new timing belt, starting on the right side and working counterclockwise. Keep the tension on the right nontensioned side. Loosen the tensioner pulley nut. Using the two-pin wrench, turn the tensioner pulley clockwise until the notch and raised mark are aligned. Torque the tensioner pulley nut to 15 foot pounds of torque. Make sure the flywheel timing mark is still aligned.

    Step 6

    Torque the camshaft bolt to 33 foot pounds of torque. Remove the locking pin from the injection pump and remove the camshaft setting bar. Turn the crankshaft two turns and check the alignment on the flywheel. Make sure that the setting bar can be inserted easily and that the injection pump locking pin can be inserted. Install all components in reverse order of removal and torque the crankshaft bolt to 18 foot pounds of torque.

    My Recommendation - Pay an authorized VW mechanic $500 to replace the timing belt water pump an tensioner, and sleep better knowing that the job was done right.
