I've read your solution about removing the glove box for the cabin air filter replacement but read in another place that prior and including 2002 Corolla's didn't have cabin air filters -- can you confirm?

The cabin air filter is located behind the glove box, you will have to remove the glove box, behind the glove box is a cover about 1" high and 7" long, remove that cover and you will see a tray that holds the cabin air filter, remove the tray and you can replace the paper cabin air filter, I recomend using a Toyota cabin air filter, the Toyota cabin air filter is a HEPA air filter and is available at any Toyota dealer for about $ 30
I have an 06 corrolla. Open the glove box, empty it out, and on both sides you will find philips head screws holding the supports. Once removed the glove box will tip forward and expose the cover of the cabin air filter. Carefully remove the cover and pull out the filter.(note the directional arrows of the filter as you remove it) Installation is a reversal of the above.
it is located behind the glove box. remove the screw holding the strut on the glove box. Squeeze sides of glovebox together to remove from dash. look into hole where the glove box was There is a removable panel for the air filter. take it out and pull out the filter. make sure you note which way the filter is oriented. push in new filter and replace cover and glove box.
Remove all of the contents in the glove box. Remove the glove box door support. Open the glove box. Squeeze the sides of the glove box inward, to drop the box door open further. The cabin air filter is in a small rectangular box, behind the glove box.
If you have a cabin air filter, it will be located behind the glove box. You need to open the glove box, remove all of the contents, disengage the rod at the right side, and squeeze in on both of the sides towards the center of the box, this defeats the "stops" that keep it from falling out when opened. Let the box door swing down. Right behind the opening left by moving the glove box down & out of the way is the heater box. Look for a rectangular tray, on the box, facing you, pull it straight out towards you. The cabin air filter is located in this tray, if you have one.
No tray = no filter.
Very easy to do this.
