This is too easy, just take a OBD2 code reader to plug the OBD part, and operate the reader, you will get the codes.

I have a 2004 mazda rx 8 we may disconnect the battery to clear the "check engine light" -- if we do, will we need a "code" for the radio, or anything else?

You WILL probably need a code. Your car might not remember it as it needs the battery to keep memory. The best way to clear the check engine light is to buy a code reader. Costco has a cheepie one that works great. $35.00 . The code reader will also give you "code" that your car is throwing. Disconnecting the battery to clear the code is only a band-aid fix. If there is a problem with your car the "check engine light" will turn right back on. Just clearing the code obviously doesn't fix your problem.

My "check engine light" is

It could be any number of things. The first thing you need to do is retrieve the code(s) set by the computer. In some states your local auto parts store will do this for free. Once you have the code(s) it will tell you what the problem is and you can plan the proper repair.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE DRIVING, CAR DIED , FOUND OIL IN 3 OF THE PLUGS REPLACED VALVE COVER GASKET AND RINGS AND PLUGS TRIED 2 START BUT NO SPARK, DID CODE RECOVERY W/ IGNITION KEY. THE BEEPS...

What year is your car and what engine? That makes a lot of difference. What the pulses should indicate is a code 12 is stored (code 55 is usually an "all clear" code, meaning that the ECU is done reading out the codes that are stored). If you got only a 55, it would mean you have no codes. 1255 means that 12 is the only code you have stored.
