fuel pump and fuel sending unit 1 piece in fuel tank whole goes up and down with the fuel it's sticking and not going all the way down witch tells u theres a 1/4 tank when it is really empty, the unit is not cheap.
You must remove the fuel tank to access the fuel level sending unit. the float is one part of the sending unit. The whole part is called the fuel tank module and is about $200.00 for the part. Do not use a cheap replacement, use a quality part like those made by Carter or Bosch.
you need to go get a manual on this at your local parts store(haynes #24065)this is not a real big job to do,i have put one in my truck this manual breaks it down very good,i orderd my stuff from partsgeek.com saved a lot of money with them,i would advise you to change the whole unit, pump and sending unit,i went cheap and only replaced the fuel pump, well a month later the sending unit went out so i had to drop the tank again to put a new sending unit in it..
Did you check the fuel pump relay switch? (behind R-headlight, from radiator, 3rd over [3.1 V6]) They have caused many unnecessary pump replacements.
As for the pump; You will need to drop the tank, but emptying it isn't required. First: Disconnect the battery.
There are 2 straps holding the tank to the vehicle, and once out you'll pull the sending unit at the top of the tank. * Remove the electrical connections before opening the fuel lines...redundant, I know...but safe.
Should the weight of a full tank be an issue, a cheap hand-pump from Autozone will connect to the primary fuel line in order to transfer the fuel to containers (or another vehicle).
Yes the float has probably sank in the tank (fuel senser) to test just pull wire off sender and put to earth gauge should shoot up to full ! then you know for shure just replace the senser unit they are only cheap!
Have a dood one ....Bruce
There must be a problem with the sending unit it the tank. In order to replace it you would have to pull the fuel tank out and replace the sending unit. If it works for the second half, you may just be better off living with it that way. It is not cheap to replace the sending unit and you may as well replace the whole unit when you are in there. Many times just messing with the pump which is part of the sending unit will cause it to fail.
It defanetly sounds like a sending unit and the fuel tank needs to be removed in order to replace it and it will most likely come with a new fuel pump too. They come as a unit and there not cheap. Sorry.
the problem is in the fuel sending unit and they are not sold seperately. The fuel pump assy will be your best bet-it will come with a new pump and sending unit. It's not too cheap-around $250-$300
