Timing chain adjuster stiff and cannot be fixed after timing

The top was grinded and the valve comb fixed. when it was being coupled, the adjuster was not fixing properly due to keying in of its spindle

You will have to get a new adjuster for it, The old one is siezed up,

the adjustment of the timing chain is hydraulic and self adjust to maintain correct chain tension. IF the mileage indicates that the chain may need replacing then these adjusters have to be compressed and pinned before chain removal . Check that any noise is not coming from valve rocker gear which wears out before most chains

Grinding nose from timing cover and a tick from valve cover could that tick be chain slap or is the 2.4 a no tolarince motor


The Tick is more likely worn lifters and cam. The grinding noise is most likely the timing chain guide is worn out or broken. Possibly a bad timing chain Tensioner. That IS an interference engine.

Timing chain was replaced but the mechanic states my valves are bad.how come he didn't detect this problem from the start of the job?


most likely he put the chain on wrong in respect to the timing and bounced a valve on top of a piston and bent them .Why were you replacing the chain as they never wear out ,the adjuster maybe but a whole new chain?? that runs in oil and should last the life of the vehicle and a bit longer .

When the timing chain breaks does it usually damage anything else or will replacing the timing chain and gears take care of the problem?


When the timing chain breaks the cam quits turning. Any valves that are open, remain open.
If the motor is turned over trying to start it or bump starting it in gear, the pistons come up and
hit the open valves. Bent valves are common. If it is a 4 cylinder only a couple valves will be open
at a time so you may damage 2 or 4 (there are usually 2 per cylinder so a 4 cylinder has 8).
You could replace the chain, make sure the timing marks align with eahother and the chain but
just getting the cam and crankshaft to alignment could cause some damage. Good luck. I did
it to mine once. Bent 4 of the 8 and had to pull the head, sent to the machine shop and reassemble.
I tried to bump start mine down a 2 mile hill. Ohh well! It's fixable.

Heavy ticking from top of motor on 1998 sl2. Thinking it's the timing chain at first but it is really sounding heavy on top of valve cover. Is it timing chain or valves. If valves what is likely cause....


Check your oil first. I guarantee your car burns oil and it may be very low on low. The ticking may be a lifter starved for oil or one that has debris in or on it. The timing chain usually makes a "slapping" sound when it gets slack in it from lack of tensioner adjustment.

A sure fire way to check the timing chain if you are concerned is to take off the valve cover (also a good time to replace the valve cover gasket). Then you can see the chain and feel and see if there is any slack in it.

I need to know how to fix a timing chain on a 1990 v6 3.1 chevy cavalier and do the valves get messed up when it breaks?


remove everything in your way to get to the cam timing housing cover in front of the block. Set #1 cylinder to dead top center. install new chain or belt...put it back together and litely loosen the ditributor to adjust for timing...once timing is set hold ditributor and tighten bolt. Shut down and recheck timing with the light.

2001 oldmobile alero will not start timing chain &coils replaced


i'am a little confused here. are you saying it jumped time and you took it apart and put new timmimg gear and chain in? and don't know if you got marks lined up right, between cam gear and crank gear?
