Question about 1998 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Hello, first of all thanks for taking my question. My daughter has a 1998 Toyota Camry and yesterday someone hit it on the driver front corner and exposed a white plastic tank like device that sits under the battery. I was wanting to know what this device is. It is not the coolant overflow or the windshield washer reservoir. What is it and can I leave it hanging there and still run the engine? It seems like it is part of the breather system.

    Thanks Toyota Ed, It seems logical it is some sort of air canister to help the air intake because it is a closed jug with no drain hole at the bottom. I had never noticed this device until the front end was peeled open by the accident. It is a four cylinder, but like I said this milky white plastic container was not visible until the accident.

    Toyota engineers think of everything, like noise and sucking sounds coming from the uptake of air into the engine.

    Toyota Ed,

    Registered in Tennessee, and I guess properly it is in the fender compartment directly in front of the front driver wheel, under/behind the mud shield barely visible in the engine compartment even with the breather box removed. It has about a 2 inch opening with a foam rubber collar that connects to the breather box somewhere. It has been relocated somewhat due to the crash so I do not know what it would have looked like prior to the crash.

    This device is directly under the battery? Hmmm.

    Where is your car registered?

    I have a 98 Camry (4 cylinder) here, and I see no tank-like device under the battery. She must have a V-6...Beside the battery is the intake for the air box...I would ventire that what you are seeing is the "muffler" that is built into the air intake to deaden the air noise while it enters the air box. Please respond if you agree/disagree.

Daughter hit curb, broke steering gear & other misc. parts. replaced steering box & other front end parts. while bocked up, put car in drive, passenger axle spins constant drivers random. replaced...

When both wheels are in the air it is normal that one wheel will not turn when put in gear.

There is nothing wrong with the axle or the transmission.

I was driving and my toyota camry died like it was out of gas could it be the gas filter I ran out of gas 2 times last week and where would the fuel filter be located

Hello. The fuel filter is in the engine compartment, in front of the firewall, on the drivers side.

I would dismiss the fuel filter being your problem. More than likely, your fuel pump has failed. Anytime you run the car out of gas, the fuel pump can get damaged.

1998 toyota camry V6

P0420 indicates you have a catalyst efficiency issue; replacement of the Air-Fuel Sensor should take care of that;
The P0441, P0446 and (I assume P0440); you said 446 twice, indicates a faulty or loose fuel cap; it is not sealing properly.
Please feel free to respond to me if you have any further questions.
