Re: 2001 gr cher wont unlock with key but will unlock...
Make sure that the Key is not missing any teeth. Could just be Worn down too far. If these are Ok, Key some Graphite from any Auto Parts Store and Squirt it in the Key holes. Am I wrong thinking that you have usually always used the Remote to Open?

Problem: I own a 2001 clk430 mercedes benz ,when i insert my key into the ingnition and try to start the car it wont go to first position. My steering lock doesnt unlock. Solution: One possibility...Has your battery been disconnected? If so, then it could be causing the system to not recognize the key (assuming your key has a battery and the battery is working).. If key has battery... Check it. If you have had the battery serviced and it was disconnect the computer may have to be reset.. I have had this happen with a few radios (after service).. Suddenly no radio.. Took it back to repair shop.. They reset it.. Always can ask at dealer.. I like to ask the parts department. I pick their brains before I decide what to do... I find they are very helpful (of course, I am chatty and friendly)..
Lock then unlock the doors with the power lock button, with all doors closed (key not in ignition). If this doesnt work, try again using the key to lock and unlock from the driver door, with all doors closed.
lock smith or someone authorized to use a slimjim[can do more damage if dont know how to use ]--or-- key fob wont work if vehicle battery dead if u can reach up under car at front and release hood latch then jump battery and then use key fob to unlock door
some time the buttons on the remote get worn out and it will light up but it wont unlock or lock. you can just buy a new case and switch the piece inside. If you have another remote try to see if that one works if it does then the remote case is your problem
Synchronization Turn ignition switch to position II. Turn ignition switch to position 0 and remove key. Within 1 minute: Press and hold key lock button. Press unlock button 5 times. Remote control should now operate system. If not: Repeat procedure. Programming When Key remote control added or replaced. System malfunction. How Keys can only be programmed using diagnostic equipment
Try to flush the system And inspect radiator. When moving the engine is also cooled by air. Make sure the water is circulating trough the manifold and the heater core. You can do this by atching a garden hose to each hose one at a time. You may also want to check the waterpump & thernostat..
you could very have a transponder key that has failed to let the circuit complete to start the car. check that with your local locksmith. also try to unlock your doors manually with key , on the driver side and turn to unlock at least three times, i know it sounds stupid but your car has a passive alarm built in that will prohibit it from starting sometimes because it was designed so well.:) good luck.
Actually yeah you are in luck that combination only requires dropping the oil pan. The seal is actually fairly easy to do it yourself, if your inclined. Parts about $20.00 and it's book rate is 5 hours. around here shops charge around $85/hour. About $500.00 out the door or under $50.00 if you want to get greasy. Here's a good picture guided step by step on a Jeep CJ with a 4.0 liter, yours is pretty much the same:
