That is a common problem when the BAFFLES in the muffler let go. They start "baffling" around inside the muffler. ck that first.

SOURCE: 1996 Volvo 960 has shifting problem.

Check the catalytic converter. You can do this by banging on it and listen for a rattle. Sometimes, the inside gets melted into a little ball and blocks the exhaust from getting out on acceleration. This will cause a serious loss of power and feel like a trans malfunction.

Check for vacuum leaks. Also make sure any air intake boots are on tightly. If not, this could give faulty readings to the MAF.

Is an engine light on? If so, get the codes pulled free at an auto parts store.

Ford Escort - 1997 car does not accelerate up hills. it revs if i am careful on flat up to 50mph but not past that? need to know what it possibly is and how it might cost asap? thanks

Look into exhaust, clogged cat conv. could cause that. Best way to test is a vaccum test on the intake. When exhaust is restricted the vaccum should go to 0 at the intake manifold while accelerating.

I have a 1994 960 volvo and when i accelerate from a stop, I hear a thumping sound from the drive shift area. what is causing this and how do i go about fixing it?

Thought I would give you a few comments as an owner of two 1993 Volvo 960s, one in Texas (summer car) and one in Sweden where I live.
My Texas 960 thumps as I accelerate. It can be the center drive shaft bearing that sits in a rubber holder. You can check it by putting your car on a lift and grab hold of this center joint and see if it is loose.

Or the noise can come from the front exhaust pipe vibrating and hitting the frame (symtom). Can be that the motor mounts are weak and worn out (problem). Best check is to put the car on a lift and have someone start the engine and check to see how much the engine vibrates. Look for scuff marks on the exhaust and frame. I will do the same on my 960 and will report back.

Remember this, 70-80% of the faults you can see or feel. Bad contacts due to corrision or just loose connections are very common.

We have a 95 Volvo 960 wagon and when the heater is turned on it drains the engine coolant and then the coolant light comes on??

You have a coolant leak past the heater valve in the hose or in the heater core. It must be dripping to the road and not in the floor or you would notice the wet floor.

Hi Eric,
I don't know what happened but the session was ended?? But here is my email: if you wish to email me.
The test you did is not really testing the computer, I think it test only the lever position locking?? But actually Volvo diagnosis socket cannot be jumped to read codes as on most other car you can. The only advice is to get in contact with Volvo dealer and try to ecplain to the service manager there what the problem is and see if they have a temporary solution(which I doubt) but if you don't ask you will not know.

My 1996 Volvo 960 2.9 ltr drives in all Position except reverse

I am not 100% but this should be a good place to start and it will cost you nothing. You need to get under the car. You will see that there is a thin long shaft that is theaded on the end. It should have a rubber gromet at the connector. I believe that your gromet is worn out or perhaps you need to simple adjust the threaded end to be tight as your shifter is traveling to far. I am not an expert, but I have been all over my 960 for the past 261K miles and 10 years of ownership.

Good luck.

1996 Volvo 960 has low air conditioning flow while accelerating

Faced similar problem. Open up the dash, change all the 4 vacuum bellows and the 2 vaccum hoses connected from the firewall to the bellow on the driver's side. Also replace the 2 valve in the hood which are connected into the firewall. Problem of losing air during acceleration solved.
