Where is the heat sensor located

Hi , your engine has two sensors relating to coolant temprature , one is the ECT located just under the coil pack and it sends your temp signal to the ECU , the other is the sensor that sends the temp reading to the dash , and it is located just above the alternator on the intake manifold . hope this helps a bit.
Kind regards; Higgins

Temp control sensor

Not sure about your car. Normally the temp sensor is located somewhere on the intake manifold as it needs to sense the coolant temp. You can get the precise location from the service manual. Check with your local library. they have access to free service manuals for almost any car, but you can only get access at the library. Sometimes from your home computer if you have a library card and they provide the u/n and p/w.

For the I6 engine.....Has 1 sensor (though other cars have 2). We only have 1 coolant temperature sensor, it's located 2" above the thermostat.

95 grand am radiator fan only runs with AC on

Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. Not Questioning your Skills Just Here to Help.
TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment.
I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
Good Luck and Have A Great Evening. rejakwilson

Temp Sensor

The temp sensor known as the engine coolant temp. sensor tells the computer if the engine is overheating and so forth and tells the injectors how much fuel to give the engine. The temp. sending unit is what controls what your guage reads. It sounds like you need the temp. sending unit. It located near the thermostat housing with a single pole connector.
