Just pull them up tight ,i assume you mean the pump mounting bolts 13mm spanner ,just a nip is all thats required say around 20lbs

3)tighten back to 40ft/lbs
4)tighten an additional 90 degrees

First you need to know the diameter of the bolts and the type of thread ie 3/8 N/C or 5/16 N/F then look at the type of bolt ie plain steel or high tensile SAE grade 3, 4, or 6, once you know this go to a general purpose bolt torque chart, and derive the torque spec info.
If the water pump is cast iron use the full torque specification.
If the water pump is alloy then reduce the torque spec 10%

Moly and other lubes offer reduced friction and increased bolt tension, which will affect the torque figure. The oil pump is an essential piece of equipment that keeps your Ford Taurus running. It lubricates the engine by keeping the oil circulating. Without this lubrication, the engine wouldn't run. An oil pump is usually located in the oil pan. If you want to change the oil pump and replace it with a new one, roll up your sleeves and get ready for some dirty work.

How to Check if an Oil Pump Is Bad

Things You'll Need




  • Wrench



  • New oil pump



  • New A/C bolts

Remove Old Oil Pump


  1. Drive your Ford Taurus up onto ramps or lifts so you have room to work as you pull out the oil pump. You could also use a jack, but make sure you brace the front wheels so they don't roll. In addition, set the emergency break firmly into position so the car doesn't roll.


  2. Take the engine out and put it on an engine stand then remove the upper intake manifold. Take off the valve covers then the accessory drive belt.


  3. Remove the power steering pump and the alternator. The water pump is the next component to remove, followed by the A/C compressor and bracket.


  4. Rotate the pulley shaft clockwise to remove the crankshaft pulley. It has left-handed threads.

  5. Pull out the oil pan and the oil pump screen and tube. Take off the front cover and the timing chains and remove the crankshaft timing gears. Finally, remove the oil pump, taking note of the bolts you removed and in which order you remove them.

Insert New Oil Pump


  1. Install the new oil pump and put the bolts back on in the same manner you removed them. Tighten these bolts to 71 to 106 in-lb.


  2. Reinsert the crankshaft timing gears, timing chains and front cover. Put the oil pump screen and tube back on, torquing the bolts to 71 to 106 in-lb, and torque the nut to 15 to 22 ft-lb.

  3. Put the oil pan back in, then the crankshaft pulley. Install the A/C compressor and bracket using new bolts for the A/C. Add the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, the accessory drive belt, valve covers and upper intake manifold.


  4. Replace the engine back into your Ford Taurus and fill the crankcase. Start your engine and look for leaks in the area you were working.

  • New alternator
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
    • 1Determine which alternator your Ford Taurus will need. You'll want to be sure the new alternator is compatible with your Taurus's engine. Models made from 1986 to 1991 have a 2.5 L HSC, 3.0 L Vulcan or 3.8 L engine. The 2.5 L engine was dropped for 1992 to 1995 models, and post-1995 models will have a 3.0 L engine.
    • 2Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench. Release the tension on the accessory drive belt so that you can remove the drive belt from the pulley.
    • 3Take off the mounting bolt on the right side of the alternator with a socket wrench and remove the bracket for the power steering hose. Remove the mounting bolts on top of the alternator, the front passenger wheel and tire assembly and the front fender splash shield. Remove the alternator splash shield with a socket wrench and take off the inspection cover for the torque converter.
    • 4Mount a tool to hold the flywheel so you can remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley. Lower the alternator so you can unplug its electrical connections. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor and Oxygen sensor connector. Remove the lower alternator mounting bolt and B+ connector nut to remove the alternator.
    • 5Install the new alternator assembly by reversing the above procedure. Use a torque wrench to tighten the B+ connector nut to 71 in. lbs. and the lower alternator bolt to 18 foot pounds. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 74. foot pounds, the upper alternator bolts to 18 foot pounds and the nut for the power steering hose bracket to 13 foot pounds.

Power Steering Pump Removal & Installation Power Steering Pump (2V) To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  4. Remove the alternator.
  5. Drain and remove the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
  6. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump underneath the vehicle. Disconnect the hydraulic pressure and return lines and allow to drain.
  7. Remove the idler pulley from the power steering pump support.
  8. Remove the belt tensioner.
  9. Remove the bracket mounting bolt located under the belt tensioner mounting.
  10. Remove two retaining nuts from the bracket mounting studs. Remove both mounting studs, and pull off the power steering pump support with the pump attached.
  11. Clamp the pump support bracket in a suitable vise.
  12. Remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump shaft using Pump Pulley Remover T69L-10300-B, or equivalent. Remove the three bolts retaining the power steering pump to the power steering pump support and remove the power steering pump.

To Install:
NOTE: The pulley must be installed within 0.010 in (0.25 mm) flush with the power steering pump shaft.

  1. Install the power steering pump to the power steering pump support. Tighten the mounting bolts to 18 ft-lb. (25 Nm).
  2. Install the power steering pump pulley using Steering Pump Pulley Replacer T65P-3A733-C, or equivalent; the pulley face must be flush within 0.010 inch (0.25mm) of the pump shaft.
  3. Install the power steering pump/pump support and torque nuts/bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
  4. Install the bracket mounting bolt located under the belt tensioner mounting.
  5. Install the belt tensioner.
  6. Install the idler pulley to the power steering pump support.
  7. Connect the hydraulic pressure and return lines.
  8. Install the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
  9. Install the alternator.
  10. Install the accessory drive belt.
  11. Fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid.
  12. Connect the battery ground cable.
  13. Run the engine and check for leaks and proper operation. Bleed the power steering system if needed.
