Question about 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse
How do I access the Diagnostics and interpret the codes?
You either buy an OBD II reader at a place like Harbor Freight for $75, or take it to a place like Autozone that will read it for nothing. The plug location will be shown in the owner's manual, but it always inside the car, below the dash somewhere. The codes are universal, so you can just look them up on the internet.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I believe this engine is with interference, therefore valve damage is possible. To check if it is with interference, remove all of the spark plugs, carefully and gently, by hand, rotate over the crank, if it contacts a valve (do this carefully) well.... then you have your answer. I'd then replace the belt with proper timing and do a compression check. If a valve went bad, you know quickly.
I hope this may have helped and I we'll keep our fingers crossed for you,

SOURCE: What type of engine oil
Hello ianandserena, you both have very nice names. This is simply the opinion of one person, but, if you do your oil and filter regularly, say between every 3,000 -5,000 miles, it doesnt really matter. If it were me, I would buy the cheapest on the shelf.
If your wanting to know the oil type, like 10-w-30, 5-w-20, I believe your car calls for 10-w-30, they do have a special blend for high mile cars that you may consider if your car has more than 100,000 miles.
Good luck my friend!
