SOURCE: chevy steering wheel controls

You first have to disarm and remove the air bag (unscrews with bolts from behind the steering wheel) and then you will see the screws for the switches. Only the silverado awitches will work.

Try unhooking the positive post on the battery this should reset the system. As far as the radio controls and airbag, this shouldn't be related the changing parts. Try checking the fuse panel for burnt out fuses.

SOURCE: How do you remove the steering wheel on a 2000

Hi there,

Reach behind, there are 4 screws. Remove these screws and pull of air bag assembly. Make sure negative battery cable has been disconnected for 10 minutes and SRS fuse has been pulled. Once the air bag assembly is off, pull the horn wire off, then remove steering wheel nut and washer and pull of the wheel.

Good luck...

since the airbag is located inside the steering wheel. i do not recommend that you attempt to remove the steering wheel.besides the danger of having the airbag deploy, the cost to have it reset is really expensive.

The procedure to remove the ignition switch is
  1. Start by disconnecting you negative battery cable.
  2. Wait at least 1 minute to disable your airbag system.
  3. Remove the airbag from the steering wheel, it's retained by a couple bolts on the back of the steering wheel.
  4. Disconnect the wires to it, and set it aside.
  5. Remove the clip that is above the lock nut for the steering wheel, then remove the lock nut.
  6. You need a steering wheel puller to pull the steering wheel off. After you remove the steering wheel, you should have access to the turn signal switch.

How to remove the cover off the steering on a 2002

Does your vehicle have an airbag in it? (SEE WARNING BELOW)
If so, you have to let the vehicle sit (no key in ignition!) for AT LEAST 30 minutes to deactivate airbag. Remove the screws from the back of the steering wheel to remove the airbag unit, (once airbag is removed, you should be able to see a little spring and a wire attached to the spring that is a push in and turn setup. That is attached to your horn button and if that is where the short is, fine. If not, you will have to proceed with taking the steering wheel off.) Make sure you make that vehicle sit for as long as possible before removing the airbag. Otherwise, it WILL deploy in your face and set you into the back seat at the very least!!!!!
To be safe, disconnect battery before even attempting to do anything with the steering wheel.

How do I remove the Steering Wheel on 2002 Pontiac Grand AM

Relax it will all be aight. Step number 2: Go out and have a coke and a smoke break (as my tech school instructor said to me when I asked this question in tech school haha ! ! ). The Airbag System has a reserve power sytem that will allow the airbags to deploy up to a certain time if for some reason the battery becomes disabled in the event of an accident. U only have to unplug the airbag module from the Clockspring. If it will make you feel more comfortable, leave your battery disconnected for a half hour and then start the disassembly process of your steering wheel. After a half hour you just unplug the airbag connectors from the clockspring. Hope I was able to calm your nerves so you can remove your steering wheel without having the fear of blowing up your airbag.

Do i have to remove strg wheel to replace ign switch???

Yes the steering wheel must be removed, this requires special tools, a steering wheel puller and a wheel lock ring spring compressor, u must also dis-arm the Airbag system, failure to do this can allow the Airbag to go off and cause grave perasonnel injury.

Service Airbag warning on cluster in 04 Silverado 1500

the most common cause of this light is an open circuit in the coiled ribbon contact to the steering wheel airbag, it is under the steering wheel, it looks like a clock-spring and it always the steering wheel to move while maintaining a physical electrical connection to the airbag module on the steering wheel, after thousands of times of coiling and un-coiling it breaks and then the airbag diagnostic monitor senses the open electrical circuit and turns the light on. U must disarm the airbag to remove the steering wheel to replace this contact, if this is not done the airbag can fire and cause serious injury.

In order to replace this part u must remove the steering wheel, u MUST disarm the steering wheel mounted airbag before doing this, if u don't the airbag can fire and cause serious injury.
