Smoke coming from under the hood- '96 Sebring

The past couple of weeks my car has been running hot and when I put water in it the problem goes away. A puddle in my passenger side floorboard formed a couple days ago. Today my car shut off and the engine light immediately came on. I pulled it into a spot and there was smoke coming out from under the hood. The smoke smelled like burning oil. There is oil in the car but it looks watery maybe. Any ideas what might be the problem.

Smoke coming from the hood check engine light

Someone else's code may not help you as the light could come on for a number of reasons. Smoke under your hood could be due to a leak or leaks such as oil, coolant, power steering fluid and so on and as the engine gets hot the fluids will burn off on the hot engine or exhaust causing it to smoke. The smell when you turn the heat on could be because your heater core is leaking. This would be accompanied with low coolant levels, overheating and low heat especially at idle also the carpet may be wet. If your vehicle is equipped with a cabin air filter the smell could also come from there as leaves and other debris and sometimes even rodents can get in there. Also if you don't allow you evaporator to dry by shutting off the ac but letting the fan run for a couple of minutes the water on the evaporator can cause mold and mildew to grow giving you a funny smell as well. Hope this helps.

Power streering leak, smoke under hood for 1996 Geo Prizm

Yes , power steering fluid will smoke if it gets on a hot engine, especially on any part of the exhaust system. Barring anything else wrong with the engine such as a coolant leak, and the engine running OK otherwise, I would say that the smoke is from power steering fluid dripping or getting blown on the exhaust by the fan.

When turning on the A/C sometimes a white smoke looking vapor comes out. It goes away after a while though.

It's condensation. Moisture on the evaporator core. You may have a leak in your heater core or stopped drains in your ventilation system. To check for leak take to radiator shop have them pressure test system. To check for proper drain under car area below dash there are rubber hose outlets where the fresh air inlets drain any water, that comes into the cowl intake, dirt leaves etc. can stop up or restrict the drains and must be flushed. Easy way to tell run water into grill area under hood behind engine on cow area where you can see through and see wiper mechanics. This isn't smoke, smoke would stay, smell and take a while to go away and probably choke you. Hope this helps, please let me know. gl..dc

Smoke is coming out from under my hood...checked antifreeze and oil so it fine

white smoke usualy tells about a leakage in the cooling. check that. dont forgett to refill. get it repaired or DIY. attention: could be really hot.

if it smells like fuel, a fuel line is broken. then dont drive any more since it can catch fire.

if the smoke is not white, go to the repair shop instantly.

2000 Jetta is Leaking antifreeze and smoking

I think you mean you saw water vapor (some call it steam) not smoke.

You probably have a hose leaking (badly). If it's not a hose, your water pump shaft seal is probably kaput.

Smoke

  1. Sometimes the steam from under the hood, because it is over heat.

  1. Check the water hose include the heater hose, it is a smaller hose behind the engine on the top near the back of the hood, find out which hopes is leaking.

  1. If the hose is OK, check the freeze plug on the engine, because if the engine is too old, maybe the plug was rust and leaking, when it’s leaking, the engine is hot, you will see the steam under the hood.

  1. When engine is hot, you have to be very carefully, do not open the water cap, if you want to open, you have to either wait a while or use a heavy towel to cover the radiator cap, then open it.

  1. Maybe the radiator is leaking.
I hope this can help you a little bit. good luck.
