The instrument cluster needs to be replaced. However, it'll have to be removed to determine the color of the plug in the back. 1997 is usually red. If you hit the dash above the instrument cluster (with the key in the run position) you'll see the gauges come on (sometimes it has to be hit a few times) and it'll get you where you have to go. I only suggest hitting it a a diagnostic technique of to get you back home. I hope I've helped. You can check my testimonials if this seems somewhat unorthodox. I'll admit that it is, but it works. The instrument cluster contacts most likely have small cracks in them. Do the lights on the temperature controls flash also? Thanks for using Fixya. Please rate my assistance and leave a testimonial.
relay coil may be a bit weak and is sharing power with the headlight relay. Try swapping the relay with the horn relay or another similar one that is non-essential to operation of the car. If that doesn't work, you may have a loose wire on the headlight switch or at the relay socket.
check the main fuse box under the hood, also check that the left front turn signal to see if the bulb is blown, sometimes when only one bulb is working it can cause it to flash much quicker, also check all the wiring there could be a short circuit somewhere ,this can also cause this problem.....hope this helps.....cheers
It is the headlight switch, very common problem on jeeps, my 96 grand cherokee dose the same but most times the lights will flicker. Try spraying a small amount of WD-40 in to the panel dimmer switch and then move it around and kind of jiggle it around.
my 99 dakota has gone thru 3 switches. I have found that if they do it now ---i take off the instrument guard ---no screws --- unscrew the headlamp switch ----and spray all movable parts with wd-40 it fixes it for about 3 months. my theory is the switch gets wet from AC condensation and builds up a film that the switch arm just rides on. hope this helps.
check your ipc computer-instrument panel cluster-check see if lights and other gages lights come on if not it,your ipc maybe your problem. i had this problem on a 1996 buick skylard,
