Hi Igray, there is nothing wrong. When the steering wheel lock engages it is a mechanical engagement which drops a metal ****** into a slot in the steering column. It is usually required to either lift or lower the wheel a little to disengage. Regards John

Do you mean that the key will not turn until you move the wheel a bit? That is normal, the effect of the steering lock when the ignition is off.

If the key does turn, but the car will not start unless you wiggle the wheel at the same time, you have a loose or broken wiring connection, or frayed wire, around the ignition switch somewhere.

My steering wheel locks up when I put it in park, and when I try to restart it, it won't crank. The key won't turn. What do I need to do?

grab the steering wheel and turn it left or to the right and sometimes you might have to put a little effort in it but one way the steering wheel will move about 1-2" and as you are moving it with one hand take the other hand and turn the key and it should turn a lot easier.this is a common thing and if you can try to have the wheels straight and try not to use the steering wheel to get in or out of the vehicle and the wheel should not lock and make it so hard on you.you have to use both hands at the same time one moving the wheel and the other one turning the key but start moving the wheel in the in direction that it moves the most then turn the key.

I parked my range rovver 2004 model. then after a while i came back and start the car. it started perfectly but the stearing column would'nt turn and its jammed.

take the key out and moved the steering wheel.if moves a little then put key back in and attempt to move again. still doesnt then there might be a problem with your steering pin not retracking back in.causing the pin to stick out.also be alittle rough if steering wheel is turned to hard to one side.turn to side when car on and tryback and forth.to help pin retrack back in and release lock mech.

IGNITION AND STEERING LOCKED!

Try pressing the key down little bit while you are trying to turn it towards ignition, at the same time slowly turning the steering wheel clockwise and counter clockwise ( it's locked but it still moves a little bit), it should release the steering wheel lock. hope it helps
p.s please rate the answer if you found it helpful, i need it for my ratings, thanks!

2000 Buick Century started pulling to the right on freeway.

if you hold the steering wheel straight ahead does the car move side to side or does the steering wheel fight you to move side to side.

Starts if you turn steering wheel

I will take a guess at this. You can't turn the key until you turn the steering wheel a little to the left or the right? This is usually caused by friction on the steering locking mechanism which keeps the key from turning in order to start the car. If this is not the case then you may have a bad ignition switch or cable head connecting to the switch that is not making contact until you move the steering wheel around and it makes contact allowing you to start the vehicle. Good Luck, RAC

Steering won't unlock so that we can start van

If the wheel is turned left or right try turning it in the same direction the wheels are turned, the steering wheel should move a little and should be able to turn the key while holding the wheel. May need to use some muscle to move the wheel depends on how it was parked.
