Yes, There is 2 batteries. the high compression engine will not turn over fast enough with just one battery. not enough cranking amps. the 2 batteries are wired parraell of each other. thus producing the same voltage but the full cranking amps needed.

We just bought this 2003 GMC Sierra 2500 HD with the 6.6L Duramax diesel with Allison Transmission. Tried to start it tonight and would turn over but not start. When key is turned and the engine turns over the headlights go completely out. Was thinking it might be the batteries. Is that the right thought?

does the motor continue turning over rapidly? or does it just barely turn .

I would just say turn over but doesn't seem to be enough to start engine. Additional infi was that we had it to the GM dealership last Monday and they replaced the fuel filter at that time. We initially were going to take our fifth wheel camper down to be repaired and had the service engine light come on and would lose power whenever the truck would have to shift down going up a hill. Would stop and could not get any RPM's. Let set for awhile and would be able to start going again and would get along okay until it shifted down. Finally left the camper at a campgound and came on home. After we had the fuel filter changed, truck worked fine, had super power. Was started yesterday and worked fine. Turned cold outside last night and again today never got above 40 degrees. Also another note, when he was trying to start the engine, he had a trickle charger on it.

Now with all that you have told me. First is that the trickle charger wouldnt help for turning it over. it is for slow charging and battery keep up. you would need a battery boost charger for that. couple things. how is the battery cable ends, that clamp to the battery. are they clean or corroded up?. if corroded then need to clean and maybe scrape the battery posts and inside of cable ends. (if corroded) another thing that strikes me is the loss of power you had. a clogged air filter will have the sam effect on it. also the fuel pump could be weak . I would recommend leaving the charger on all night, plus there should be a block heater on it. plug that in also and try to start it in the morning. if it mdoesnt want to start then i would check to see that the fuel pump is operating. I am thinking that the batteries are weak. plugging in the block heater will help.

Thanks for your help. Had done all those things and still wouldn't start this morning. Had to call our local repairman this morning and he came down and primed the fuel. They have taken it in to the shop. We live in a small towh(less than 200 people) and can still get personal service. We appreciate all your help though and hopefully can get things going again.

Excessive black exhaust on 2003 GMC Sierra Duramax Diesel.

This is what i would try (cheapest first) redexe/wyyns
injector cleaner, double dose, then i have put 1gal gas in 10gal diesel to increase burn temp (you may encounter a hot start problem temporarilly)then if still smoking, get a compresion check on the engine(this will tell you volumes)
by the way the NATO tanks put in 1/3 gas in diesel to stop it freezing in arctic conditions.any more than 1/3 can result in problems.
