Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

Squeak Intermittent squeak/squawk - sounds like a belt noise. Belt, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, and water pump have been replaced. Squeak is intermittent - hasn't been affected by any of the new parts. Running out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Jeff

SOURCE: I can't stop the squeak on my 8.1l chevy 2500hd.

There is a pulley out of alignment. Only 1/8th inch out will cause a serpentine to sqeak.

I would suspect the altenator, A/C pulley, or the belt. when you checked the altenator and a/c they have to turn smoothly with no play or roughness. If these checked out fine then I would check the belt, they do stretch.

Makes squealing noise

You need to check the belt that drives the alternator for proper operation. The belt may be old and worn, or a pulley may be not freewheeling, but seized or with a bad bearing. Possibly the tension on the belt is too loose from a worn out tensioner.

First, spray a little water on the belt with engine running and see if noise goes away, possibly a worn belt. Pull the belt off and check all pulleys. Spin them by hand and see if spins easy, no rough feeling or a catch when spun. Check alternator pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, PS pump pulley and A/C compressor pulley-check them all for free wheeling. If good check the tension on the belt when installed. If unsure, have a mechanic check tension with a belt tension tool.
If belt is good and pulleys good, check alternator output with a voltmeter on the battery with engine running. If voltmeter is below 13.5 volts, the charging system is still not working properly. Have it checked out.

Squeaky noises under the hood

IT COULD BE AN IDLER, TENSIONER, OR THE BELT SLIPPING, THESE ARE SEALED YOU CAN'T LUBE THEM. IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BELT IS SLIPPING, BUT IT COULD BE SLIPPING BECAUSE OF A FAULTY IDLER\TENSIONER. REMOVE THE BELT, MAKE SURE ENGINE IS SHUT OFF, AND YOU HAVE THE KEYS, ROTATE ALL THE PULLEY'S AND THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY THEY SHOULD ROTATE FREELY AND RUN TRUE, AND NO ROUGH FEEL TO THEM, OR THE TENSION COULD BE TOO WEEK TO KEEP THE BELT TIGHT.

Does squeaking coming from automoble water pump indicate water pump bearing is bad

If you take the belt off and there is no noticeable in/out, up/down, or side to side movement of pulley and there is no noise when rotating, a new belt may be all you need. Make sure you check ALL of the other belt driven components including idler pulleys and belt tensioner pulley. A worn tensioner can squeak also.

What makes a belt squeak?

Belts squeak for the same reason tires do when they spin. They are slipping. Something isn't turning as fast as the belt wants it to. On ford it's usually ether the idler sprocket or the tensioner. If you remove the belt and try spinning all of the pulleys by hand.( note the crank wont spin freely) you will usually be able to tell witch ones slipping.

Squeaking noise front drivers side of engine

Loosen the belts [ you do not need to remove] so they are free of tension to all pulleys.Start engine , if noise goes away either belts were too loose [ common on lx 450] or you have a worn & noisey pulley /bearing.have seen idler pulley below alternator have dry / noisey bearing.Otherwise if idler is ok it has to be another belt driven assessory , ac clutch, water pump & or fan clutch.Good Luck.
