Question about Peugeot 306
Sounds like rod bearings, but may be piston slap. Add some motor honey to oil to thickn it up and see if that helps.

the service engine light means one of the sensors are bad or the idle control or even the throttle position sensor , these will cause your symptoms
you will need to check the code which will tell you exactly what has went bad and needs to be replaced
hope this info is worth a fixya , since everything else hurts our scoring , and if you need any more help I'll be glad to help

Do a compression test first.find out where you stand with the engines condition. If you think its coming from the belt area directly, then remove the belt/s and manually spin and wiggle each pulley. Try to see if anyone of them have a bad bearing. Let us know.

I Have a 1995 Dodge Ram truck and it will once in awhile make popping noises or backfires through exhaust, then i lose power. but if i let off the accelerator it's ok until i step on the pedal, even if i peg it to the floor. I changed my spark plugs, but it still happens.Like i said though it doesn't happen all the time just occasionally.
