SOURCE: I have a coolant leak on my 2000 BMW 528i and now it overheating.

Pressure test cooling system to determine origin of leak. Radiator and coolant reservoirs are common problems. Vehicle is very difficult to purge air from cooling system and may take multiple times of idling until thermostat opens. Sometimes help to rev engine to about 2500 rpm 5-8 times to help build heat and move coolant through system. Must have heater on while performing this task.

If you've never replaced the timing belt or chain,That would be my first thing I'd check is the Timing belt or chai, just aline the timing marks on crankshaft and then look at the position on the distributor to see if it's pointed in the #1 firing position .

any check engine light? Try cleaning the intake throttle plate with a lightly soaked paper towel, the plate is located in the intake; with throttle cable attached to it at the top of the engine near the bellows boot attached to the air cleaner assembly that comes off the mass airflow to the intake. It looks a 3.5 mm cd. That plate gets dirty and throws off the idle air control.

Will a 1998 bmw 528i engine work in a 1999 bmw 528i

It is hard to be sure without checking, BMW changed from the M52B28 engine to the M52B28TU engine around that time. Enter the last 7 numbers of the VIN here to verify: http://www.bimmer.work
Find out more about the M52 engines here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M52
I recommend that you pursue your BMW questions at Bimmerforums.com. It's free and has been a fantastic resource for me over the years. Bimmerfest.com is also free and another excellent BMW resource.

Bmw diagnostic codes

I have no p2402 code under the BMW list but in the OB-11 P2 codes it refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) leak detection pump, control--circuit high===causes --wiring short to positive---EVAP leak detection pump. IF this in the area of your problem then good otherwise you may have to got o BMW service centre to get what the code refers to.

What is the meaning and solution of code P1188 on a bmw 528i of 2000?

P1188 is a fault on the pre-cat o2 sensors (reading out of scale)

Most common problem is an air leak into the engine (failed gasket or vacuum hose) or faulty air flow meter. I would not replace the o2 sensors until the other things have been checked first (10 years as a mechanic I have only ever replaced 2).

Check your engine for sucking noises, broken vacuum lines, etc. otherwise a mechanic will need to read the live data from the Air flow meter. Bosch AFM unit should hit around 500 on that model at full throttle.
