Question about 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

Spark Plug Replacement

I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, 3.0L, 2WD. I want to change the spark plugs, but i'm finding it rather difficult to get any direction. And there isn't an auto store or book store in the area who has a book or tech manual available. Is there any place i can find step by step instructions on taking off the intake plenum, valve covers, and replace the spark plugs?

The only place to get this information is at a dealership or on ebay and you have to by the Technical Assistance Manual. This is a 5 Volume Set that cost anywhere from $160-$300 depending on where you shop.

I have the same problem. The air intake manifold is strategically placed directly above 4 out of 6 of the spark plug wires. I couldn't find a manual either then the factory manual costing more than $150. My best guess is that you have to remove the entire air intake manifold and detach all of the tubes and wiring going into it.

If that is the case, you should take a picture first so it's easier to reference when putting it back together. I may or may not try that depending on whether I can get some answers online first.

I changed my spark plugs and wires myself two days ago after a quote of around $550 from a local repair shop with welcomed success. It's really high because of the time it takes to do this job. I took my time and did it in about 5 hrs. The answer given for the website is a great source and helped me through a very tedious process. My best advice in addition to that is to have some 1" tape (i used flourescent green for visibility) and a sharpie and mark EVERY STINKING WIRE, HARNESS, PLUGS AND HOSES. Also it helps to make a small diagram of the bolt patterns and varoius lengths and placement of each. I started with numbering the bolts and lettering the wires and harnesses to combat confusion. I hope this helps anyone taking on this hideous task.

engine size state, nice that....
fsm quotes for real engine.
  • Spark plug cable center cover and remove the spark plug cables
  • remove spark plug using a spark plug socket, (3/8" drive)
  • to know size tool , buy the spark plugs first and measure it.
  • if boots are tight do not force them. twist gently or use a very narrow, rod or long skinny screw driver to break the sticky gum there. i have a special tool for this.. ask.(air tool)
  • with the plugs unscrewed, and if in deep wells, look for oil down the hole, if full of oil , the Valve cover gasket is bad an this tuneup ends. fix that first. if not full of oil we use one of 3 tools to pull the plug. a 1/4?"did hose. or my mag pickup wand or my grabber wand. this is SOP. standard op. proceedures on all welled plugs.
this is engine has coil packs,, seen below.
see those high voltage wire, they go to 6 spark plugs
remove covers to see boots on sparks, twisth me gently
i would buy new NGK blue mag wires. and replace all wire.
if near or over 100k miles.

Where is the sparkplugs and how do I remove them

Follow the spark plug wires from the distributor cap, down to the block. This yahoo write up will help. If you have direct ignition (coil packs) then you will be looking for small blocks above each spark plug. Look for ignition coil packs at webites like oreillyauto.com for a visual of what you are looking for.

HOw to replace spark plug wires on a 1998 Mitsubishi montero sport?

Installing New Spark Plug Wires Is Simple, Especially Of One Wire Is Replaced At A Time. Compare The Length Of The Old Wire With The Length Of The New Wire. Replace Each Wire With One Of Equal Length.Make Sure The New Wire Is Fully Attached On The Plug And In The Distributor Or Coil Module.

Spark Plug Wire Replacement Is More Complicated If All The Wires Are Removed At Once. Then You Must Use The Engine Firing Order And Cylinder Numbers To Route Each Wire Correctly.

Most likely you have a misfire, I'd be surprised if it didnt turn on the check engine light. It may be a coil or sparkplg problem.
Do this this. With your foot on the brake hard and the ebrake on put the car in gear and rev the car up a bit. What your doing is putting a load on the engine to see if it shutters. If it does it points to a coil issue usually or it just may be time plugs and wires

How do I change spark plugs on a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero, and how long should they last? Thanks.

You have to remove the upper intake manifold to get at the wires and plugs. Mitsubishi recommends 60,000 miles for spark plug replacement, if you look in your owners manual they also want you to replacet the spark plug wires also. Timing belt also at 60K
