Do I have to remove any other parts such as the battery to have room to get the pump out and back in.
Nope, remove the belt, you may need to remove the plastic shield if equipped right above and to the rear of the pump. Remove the four bolts for the pulley and remove the pulley. Remove the five or six bolts that hold the pump to the timing chain cover. Take careful note of the orientation of the pump before you remove it. The holes that the bolts go through are not symmetrical and the pump only fits one way. Finally remove the pump. Should take thirty minutes tops with hand tools. Very easy pump to do.

SOURCE: the shifter cable came loose
The end of the cable on the GM is a molded plastic piece. Part of the cable. If the plastic tab has broken off you really only have two choices.
