Check to see if the power steering pump is still turning. If you have a broken drive belt (serpentine belt or "fan" belt), and the pump doesn't turn, you have no power assist. If the pump is still turning, check the fluid level in the reservoir.

SOURCE: Oil Pan Gasket Replacement - How to - GMC Yukon 2000

Removal Procedure

Important: The original oil pan gasket is retained and aligned to the oil pan by rivets. When installing a new gasket, it is not necessary to install new rivets.
DO NOT reuse the oil pan gasket. When installing the oil pan, install a NEW oil pan gasket.

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure
  • Remove the front differential if equipped with four wheel drive. Refer to Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement in Front Axle.
  • Remove the under body shield from the vehicle
  • Remove the oil pan underbody shield.
  • Remove the cross brace if equipped.
  • Drain the engine oil and remove the engine oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Change
  • Remove the lower transmission-to-oil pan bolts
  • Disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector.
  • Remove two front wiring harness retainer bolts.

10. Remove the engine wiring harness retainer bolts from the engine oil pan.
11. Remove the engine oil cooler pipe to oil pan bolt.
12. Remove the transmission oil cooler pipe retainer and the bolt from the oil pan.
13. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement.

15. Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Removal.

Installation Procedure

Important: The alignment of the structural oil pan is critical. The rear bolt hole locations of the oil pan provide mounting points for the transmission bellhousing. To ensure the rigidity of the powertrain and correct transmission alignment, it is important that the rear of the block and the rear of the oil pan must NEVER protrude beyond the engine block and transmission bellhousing plane.

SOURCE: How do I replace the oil pan gasket on a 2001 GMC

Changing the oil pan gasket on a GMC Yukon XL is realtively simple, but does require removal of the exhaust pipe. You will need a new oil pan gasket and a new exhaust pipe flange gasket.
Put the car on ramps or jacks to access the undercarriage.
Remove the exhaust pipe by removing the 3 nuts holding the exhaust pipe flange to the exhaust manifold. These nuts often rust and prior application of penetrating oil may be required to remove them without damage. Once the pipe is unbolted, work the exhaust system loose from the hanging brackets. In most cases the entire system does not have to be removed since there is enough room to remove the pan with only the front hangers removed.
Drain the oil from the engine
Remove the 10 mm bolts holding the pan to the block.
Remove the old gasket material and scrape any remaining gasket from the block and pan.
Install the new gasket. Forma-Gasket or a similar product may be used in small quantities to "glue" the new gasket in place and prevent shifting while the pan is reattached to the block.
Reinsall the 10 mm bolts in a cross pattern to ensure the gasket is compressed evenly. Do not overtighten the bolts.
Replace the pipe to flange gasket between the exhaust pipe and the exhaust manifold with a new part.
Reattach the exhuast pipe to the hangers.
Install the 3 bolts connecting the pipe flange to the exhaust manifold.
Fill the engine with oil.
