Question about Cadillac DeVille

I have a 1996 Caddi sedan deville, it`s a 4.6 ltr with 108,000 miles. The instrument cluster goes blank and then comes back on.It also has not started a couple of times. I took it to the dealer and they had it for a week.Of course the car did not do this at the shop.So they told me to come get it and bring it back when it goes blank again.Well it started doing it again.Although it comes back on and off.I love this car,it`s in great shape otherwise.Yet this problem is driving me crazy and i`m afraid to take it far from my house. The dealer did bring up an old code of u1000. That code mentions the ignition. Do i need to change the keyed ignition or the instrument cluster or both???

Check your wiring from the battery. I might be losing power and sometimes the ground is already rusty that causes lost contacts.

U1000 indicates a communications problem to the PCM (main computer) below is a post from the http://nissanhelp.com forum made by a Nissan Tech with step by step instructions on how to possibly fix the problem yourself. Best of luck.

Been working on my dad's 97 Caravan longer then i can remember for things you mentioned and have been not able to get him to sell it.
I found that the electrical connections are prone to corrosion and have replaced lots of the wire and pin connection in the wire harness, thank god i have time on my hands.
The instrument panel where the wire harness connects, i found that the solder goes bad and i had to re solder the connector on the back side of the circuit board, where the harness goes so you need to remove the instrument panel from the dash,

If the "evap not ready" readiness monitor never clears and you keep getting P0440,P0441,P0446 type codes, then you have a problem with the evap system. You have already tried the gas cap (good start) but there are about 6 other things it can be from electrical VSV air valves (there are 3 of them, 2 under the hood, 1 near the charcoal cannister (behind fuel tank) to 2 air operated valves on the front of the same cannister. There is also an air line that goes to one of the electric VSV valves on the air cleaner under the hood. Several oil change places have been guilty of pullling these off and not reconnecting them.

The dealer is just going to replace the cluster because they don't have the ability to fix it.
My suggestion is to get a used one from a wrecker. Note that if the odometer is included, you may need to document actual mileage for future reference..

The problem is the cluster screen is defective, remove it and have it repaired, many companies on the Internet do this repair for about $275.00 on average. Just google Cadillac instrument cluster repair.

More info needed. Is this a hatch back, sedan, or CRX? Is the odometer mechanical [old style] or digital [LCD numbers] The vehicle speed sensor [located behind the speedometer in the instrument cluster] drives both the speedometer and the odometer [mileage meter]. It sounds like an electric problem in the instrument cluster. Remove the instrument cluster and take it to your local speedometer repair shop. Look in the yellow pages for them. Or simply buy and install a used instrument cluster from a junk yard.

Replace the ign. lock cylinder and chip key to fix it. The tiny wires to the lock cylinder have broken that ore part of the cylinder. Common problem.

92 cAdillac sedan deville problems after cd player installation


You probably could but your gonna spend ALOT of money,what I would do is un install the cd player and check the wires.Undo everything you did back to the way it was before. Sounds to me like you have crossed wired or grounded something. If this fixes your problem take it to a car stereo place that installs radios and pay them to install your CD player.
