Hi i just replaced the air intake elbow from throttle body to air flow brand n ew and still the car wont idle

Try this.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

SOURCE: wont rev past 4500rpm

I hade this proble on my 86. It may not be your same problem but check the connection plugs on your secondary injectors the heat from the engine worped the connectors preventing a tight fit so they would come loose and at about 4500 rpm the car would bog cause of lak of fuel.. or your secondary injector are bad

Given all the electronic sensors that could cause this problem , your best bet is to take it to a qualified repair shop where they have advanced testing equipment . Just so you do spend all your money replacing parts ,,here is just a couple that can cause this problem ! Idle air control valve , throttle position sensor , vacuum leaks , map sensor . dirty throttle plate . mass air flow sensor . A qualified repair shop has a scan tool that can check data for all these sensors .

Where is sensor located that controls idle


Hi Marla ,

It is called Idle Air Control Valve or IAC valve for short and it is located right over the throttle body near the the throttle position sensor. Use the URL i shared below , i am also uploading a image for you.

Engen problem and missing


Sir, your question is not very clear, but I will still try to post a solution here. Engine missing could be due to any problem in fuel system, ignition system, engine or ECM as well.

LOW ENGINE IDLE SPEED (Poor idling):
-Throttle body (do the cleaning and idle speed learning)
-A /C signal circuit
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump
-Intake system
-P C V valve (clogged or open) and hose

ROUGH IDLING:
-Cylinder Compression
-Ignition system (Igniters, spark plugs, wiring harness)
-Spark plug fouled, gap too wide or too short. (1.00-1.1 mm)
-Fuel injector circuit
-E C M power source circuit
-Fuel pump control circuit
-Fuel pump (required pressure 44 psi - 49 psi)
-Throttle body (cleaning)

Misubushi triton 1990 v6 starts but wont idle


try cleaning the throttle body this usually works you can onlt use throttle body cleaner use the entire can then re attach intake also the mass air flow sensor on intake also has the specific cleaner.

Everytime that I brake or slow running, the engine stops. I've just changed the battery and added some fuel cleaner in the tank.


do you mean it wont idle or is it suttering when you come to a stop if it wont idle its normally the idle air valve located on the throttle body on the intake

Engine idles rough. Engine shuts off while coming to a complete stop unless revving engine


Rough Idle covers several symptoms. Do you mean Idle (RPM) goes up and down or do you mean it is too low and car tries to stall? Idle is dependent on fuel delivery and spark Depending on your mileage and driving style it is more likely an Idle Air Control valve, Mass Airflow Sensor or Throttle body. I would purchase CRC MAF Cleaner and CRC Throttle Body cleaner. you will need to disconnect the induction hose from the air filter and throttle body. On the Taurus/Sable the air filter is loated on driver side under hood. Trace back from it and mid way youwill find a plastic cylinder that is wired in with a plug. Unplug the MAF. Make sure and notate which side is facing the engine as the air flow has to be the right way. I put a dot on the side that should face inward to remember the flow direction. Find a ventilated area and take the CRC MAF cleaner and spray the inside of the Mass airflow from about an inch away. Be careful there are very fine wires inside that can be broken by the nozzle by touching or being too close when spraying. Spray liberally and then set aside to dry. Continuing up the intake you will find the throttle body whihc is a cirucular intake that is metalic It has a butterfly valve inside. Use the same CRC brand but this time us CRC Throttle body cleaner. DONT USE CARB CLEANER OR OTHER BRAND. Ford coats their Throttle bodies with teflon and any other brand can eat this lining away. Clean in short bursts. You can gently take a clean shop rag to wipe inside with your finger as sprayed to dislodge some of the dirt, but be gentle. Dont use stiff brushes.. A qtip, a soft bristle tooth brush with very light pressure. as well. Clean it very well. Place rag underneath to catch any run off. After its cleaned and teh MAF is cleaned, replace the air filter and reassemble the unit. The car will be hard to start at first. Turn it over a few times and it will start. It will sputter a bit and then should run better. Start with MAF and Throttle body first. then move to plugs..Finally, the MAF and Throttle body should be cleaned every other oil change.

If you have a 2004 Heritage or Lightning, I would agree with richard3707 in cleaning / replacing the IAC. I would also suggest cleaning the MAFS ( Mass AirFlow Sensor ), and checking the rubber vacuum line elbow on the back of the intake as well.

The IAC is on the back of the throttle body ( need to remove the plastic throttle body cover to see it ).

The rubber elbow is just above it ( line running to the right in the picture ).
The MAFS is in the air filter housing, Take apart the air filter as you are replacing it, and clean it with MAFS cleaner ( or throttle body cleaner that is MAFS safe, it will specifically say on the can if it is ).

If you have a 2004 New Body Style, then this more than likely the Throttle position motor that is having an issue.
In the 3 valve motor, the engine is throttle by wire and the throttle is opened by the throttle motor, which sounds like it is not. You can try cleaning it, to see if it is just stuck on idle open setting.

Ecm codes are po174 po171 states to check MAF sensor or suspect fuel pressure. vehicle runs fine until you come to a stop or it is idling


Take a look at the rubber elbow on the back of the throttle body. It is under the plastic throttle body cover. This elbow can crack and allow un metered air into the system.

In this picture, it is just above the oval around the IAC

Also check the intake & air filter housing. If you just replaced the airfilter, the intake could have an air leak after the MAFS ( Mass Air Flow Sensor ). The MAFS is in the housing that the air filter is in.

When you ran it without the intake on, did you get a Check Engine Light ? You removed the MAFS ( Mass Air Flow Sensor ) which tells the truck how much air is flowing into the throttle body ( for Air / Fuel ratio with pulse width on the injectors ). This is in the body of the air filter element

You can clean this with MAFS safe spray cleaner ( not all throttle body cleaners are MAFS safe, it will say on the can if it is. If it does not say MAFS safe, it is not.

The other is the IAT ( Incoming Air Temperature ) sensor. This indicates the air temperature, so coupled with the Air Flow, this gives the density of the air, to make a correct A/F ratio adjustment.

This is the one after the air filter and the MAFS, before the throttle body.
You can clean this as well, it is a bulb sensor, be careful with cleaning it.

If the RPM are jumping around at idle, this would be a function of the IAC ( Idle Air Control ) on the back of the throttle body. When the butterfly is closed, this is what lets air in.
It is under the plastic throttle body cover, held on to the back of the throttle body with 2 8mm ( 9mm ? ) bolts.

This could be gummed up, and slow to open, so the truck opens it too much, causing the rev up, and then closes it too much to make up for it.
It is a motor operating a piston to let air into the back of the throttle body.
Removing this and cleaning it with throttle body cleaner might be a good idea. Also check the vac line to the back of the throttle body for cracks, the rubber 90* elbow is prone to cracking over time.
