Open Question

The adjustable shock absorber on my Stamina Body Trac rowing machine wears out too quickly. It begins by leaking oil and gradually loses its resistance. I have had the machine for about 2 years and have gone through 6 shock absorbers. Is there a replacement shock that fits my machine that has a longer lifespan? Both my wife and I row daily. Thanks for your help. Bob

yes and no depends on what you call speicial. youll need floor lift and an air compressor and an impact gun to remove it and apry bar to help put it back in. good luck ;P

These are just regular shocks and not struts so they should come out with just common tools. You may need to soak the fasteners in penetrating oil for a while or, use heat tget the fasteners to break loose from the corrosion.

SOURCE: remove/replace shock absorber assembly 900s 1995 saab

  1. Slightly loosen hub center nut when all four wheels are on ground.
  2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove five wheel bolts and wheel.
  3. Remove hub center nut, then the wheel sensor,
  4. Press back brake piston using slip-joint pliers,
  5. Remove caliper from steering swivel member, then suspend in wheel housing with cable tie.
  6. Remove brake disc and back plate, then slightly loosen tie rod end nut.
  7. Press out tie rod end nut using puller tool or equivalent.
  8. Remove nut and tie rod end bolt, then the anti-roll bar to swinging arm nut.
  9. Remove outer ball joint nut.
  10. Press ball joint out of steering swivel member using puller tool or equivalent, installed on spring link.
  11. Remove nut and discard. This self-locking nut must not be reused.
  12. Remove three upper mounting nuts for MacPherson strut, then the strut.
  13. Clamp MacPherson strut in vice.
  14. Compress spring using spring compressor or equivalents.
  15. Hold piston rod and remove nut using MacPherson strut socket tool 89 96 662, or equivalent. This is a self-locking nut and must not be reused.
  16. Remove mounting and top spring seat, then the coil spring, gaiter and compression stop.
  17. Unscrew damper using wrench tool No. 89 96 670, or equivalent, then remove damper from strut.
  18. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    1. Screw damper in place using wrench tool No. 89 96 670, or equivalent.
    2. Lower end of coil spring should abut against stop in bottom of spring cup.
    3. Position MacPherson strut on vehicle and install three retaining nuts on top mounting. Tighten nuts alternately, according to specifications.
    4. Always use new hub center nut with self-locking threads.

Air shocks


Mostly there is no such thing. A few vehicles are equipped with air suspension which is a different thing. I believe you could be referring to pressurised gas shock absorbers.

These are a conventional oil shock absorber with pressurised gas held in the natural air space inside. This helps the unit have a consistent performance especially when working really hard and a standard shock absorber will lose performance due to some foaming of the oil.

When it comes to shocks and suspension, many people are confused as to what the shocks on their vehicle do. The job of the shock is to slow down and damp the movement of the body on the wheel. The real function of shock absorbers are to: 1) Prevent bottoming, that is slowing down the compression of the spring and create lifting force on the wheel.
2}Prevent the tires from bouncing up and down on bumps and absorb some of the energy.
3)Keep the vehicle from bouncing up and down on the springs before settling down.
I’ve put together a few simple tests you can do even if you have no mechanical knowledge about your Lexus at all. The same principle applies for strut suspension.
1}Push your weight down on the front or rear of your Lexus and release .The vehicle should bounce up and settle down. If it continues to bounce the shocks are worn out.
2)Drive over a small bump at a speed of 20 mph and the wheel should lift to it and settle down without a thud.(the thud is the rubber snubber)
3)At 60 mph the vehicle should rise and fall quickly over a dip, then stabilize itself after 2 rebounds..If it does not the vehicle will feel like it is floating and this makes the steering very unstable.
4)On rough roads does your vehicle shake and vibrate after you go a short distance? Well if it does, it is because the oil in the shock is overheating and starting to foam. That problem can be corrected with a nitrogen gas shock.
5)The last is to look at the shock or strut and see if it is leaking oil, if so it has no compression or rebound.
If your Lexus failed any of these tests either the shocks are worn out are mismatched for your vehicle. Some of the best shocks and struts on the market are Bilstein’s Monroe, and KYBs . And remember that maintaining the shocks and or struts on your Lexus is very important to the handling and tire wear on any Lexus.

Suspension seems to be going down on back corner every few days, I can fix manually but why is this so


Possible failure of the shock absorbers or failure of the suspension support springs . You need to jack up or hoist the car to have a good inspection that must give the explanation. Do not change any part UNLESS you are convinced of the fault. Check the suspected components individually.

If my memorry serves me right, there is no tension to be adjusted, there is a shock absorber that is connected to the tensioner that keeps the tension under pressure. If the shock absorber has lost it's oil, it wont work proply and the belt wheel be lose. Replacing the shock absorber may solve this problem that you are having.

I have a 2001 Ford explorer xls. When going over a bumpy road it will sometimes keep bouncing. Is this an indication that my shocks are bad??


The job of shock absorbers is to do just that..absorb the bumps. If your vehicle's shocks wear out, or the gas charge or oil leaks out, they no longer have the ability to perform to their fullest, and what you'll get is that bouncy feeling going over bumps, and after you've gone over them it will continue to bounce.
There is an easy test you can do to confirm bad shocks and/or struts on any vehicle. With your hands, push down on the front or rear of the vehicle and get it bouncing. When you let go, the car should bounce no more than one complete up and down cycle. Any more than this and your shocks and struts are bad and in need of replacement.

Shogun 3000 5 door this is bouncy at the back and the variable switch for suspension seems to have little effect


New rear shocks/struts should solve the problem. Their purpose is to absorb bumps, bouncing, when worn out u get the basketball (up and down) effect. This is probably why the variable suspension switch has little effect. What is the mileage? Did this problem start gradually, or happen quickly? U can check rear shocks/struts for leakage of oil, another sign they should be replaced. Let me know if this helps, if not we can check further.

Shock absorber


look at each shock and look directly at the base of the shock. Look for wetness/saturation around it. It will look like a oil stain. If so that shock is losing pressure. Now keep in mind if you are going to replace the shock. GO WITH KYB. affordable and a great shock ride. and MOST OF ALL LIFETIME WARRANTY.
