Valve noise I have read that the 2.9 is inherent of valve noise... is there a "cheap" fix?

Can a valve tap in a 2004 Town Car be the tension on the timming chain?


B Mckenna, Timing chains can make noise, when you say the noise does go away sometimes, it sound more likely to be a valve lifter or tappet noise. You can pick up a mechanics stethoscope cheap and listen to the noise and hear/see if it is louder from the timing chain area or the valve covers to determine location.

My 2ltr V6 Vitara has a rattle. Top End noise, it rattles like noisy tappets on start up and gets less as the engine warms up (around five minutes) then it almost stops. So far I have pulled the rocker...


this is not SOLIDS engine, there is no LASH setting, !
the engine has a chain, and a set of hydraulic bucket valve lifters.
the chain can be bad or any lifter, can be dirty and collalpesd.
when the engine is dead and no oil pressure the lifters are normally collapsed, when you start the engine. oil pressure does 2 things
all lifters pump up, and clearance goes to zero. (no noise)
then the cam tensionor, pumps up (they fail) and chain noise ends.
some noise is ok , cold start, but most end after a minute or 2.

ever read the manual? its here.
use a stethoscope to find out 1 thing , which is it the chain or lifters making that noise.
ive even runs engine with the valve covers off (messy , use a blanket to catch oil flying) to find the true cause.......

read the 2.5L here. its close. (mech. parts)
read the Alldata virtual FSM.

Hi sounds like a bent or broken valve safaris are notorious for this not cheap to fix! when was the last time you checked the oil? hope its just low good luck!

1999 suburban lifer noise


if you have a stethascope or even a wood dowel i would check the lifters. if you have higher miles this sounds like a hydraulic lifter pumping up. if you change to a heavier oil it will go away or reduce. thats the cheap fix.

Why does it tic at start up and then disapears a minute later?


2 possibilities:

1 - could be an oiling issue. if the noise sounds internal, i would recommend running an oil cleaner through your system and changing it with a quality oil additive

2 - this is my strongest suspicion, is that you have an exhaust manifold leak starting. a small leak will sound like a tick. as the manifold heats up, it expands, causing the crack to tighten up and not leak. a mechanics stethescope will be very helpful in determining this. good luck!

Air conditioner compressor making a knocking noise while running.i read that oil needs to be put in it if so where and how or do I need to plan on replacing the compressor


Get a can of R134a refrigerant with sealant and oil and add with a hose.
Can buy at Walmart for under $30.
Buy the conversion from R-12 to R134a kit if you need to.

Sometimes adding a few ounces of oil will quiet the compressor but you have to try.

Compressor is probably a few hundred dollars to replace, so try the cheap solution first.

Is valve adjustments needed on 2000 camry V6 I am hearing noises that seems like coming from under valve cover, you can hear the noise from inside car,but not from outside of car. I was told this engine...


The valve adjustment usually isnt done unless there is valve noise. If you think its valve noise, have the dealer check it or a shop that does a LOT of Toyota work. Special tools and shims are needed to adjust the valves. Its a LOT of work and will not be cheap. You will want to replace the spark plugs at the same time.

Rattling? I would think what you hear is valve noise. The car will always have inherent metal on metal sounds when open to the air. If you think its out of the normal then take it to a shop you trust.

97 dakota engine noise / fr lower clatter


Unless you are getting this vehicle really cheap dont buy it. the noise is likely a valve lifter, it can run for years like that. However the transmission is a different story, it could be a clogged filter an easy fix. or the valve body, clutches etc which is not.

Rumbling sound


It sounds to me like you have a bearing going out in one of the rear wheels. Get it fixed soon. It's pretty pricey but it will cause a lot more problems if left unchecked.
