Happened again today. First time it's done this 2 days in a row. Was stuck in park again. Probably taking it "in" on Mon. just not sure what to tell "them" to look for. I'll mention the neutral safety switch.

Ok, think I've narrowed it down. It will only start if I'm able to make sure that the dashboard "indicator" shows that it is indeed in park( "P" lights up). If I can't get it in that position it won't start. Is this definitely the neutral safety switch then that is causing this problem or is is it something with the "stick"? thanks in advance.

How do you adjust it? I need to put the gear selector in neutral to start the car. Goes in park but doesn't light up P light thus the car will not start.

What is a 'short' trip? If you can't get it out of park, it could be your neutral safety switch.

Yes it does sound like the neutral safety switch and it may not have to be replaced just an adjustment.

Can\'t really help you with the no start problem without more information, but would advise you to stop using starting fluid right away. Starting fluid is hard on Diesel engines but they are made for much higher compression so will usually survive intermittent use of starting fluid. Gas engines just plain can\'t handle the much higher than normal compression that starting fluid produces which will destroy valves, piston rings, connecting rods, starters, ring gears on the transmission and head gaskets in short order. If you don\'t want to have to completely rebuild your gas engine don\'t use starting fluid on it ever!

The low-reverse band may need adjustment. The tranny oil pan needs to removed to do this & you might as well change the tranny filter while your there. Purchase a chilton manual or haynes manual. Both show the procedure & specs to do the job. Also check your tranny fluid level first. Warm the car up & take for a short drive first. Check in park & make sure the van is on a level surface. If it is low, add but do not over fill. Low fluid will cause this symtom also. Good luck!

If there is a short that makes any difference, it would have to be interfering with the current to the ignition. You an easily tell with a test light at the ignition coil. But I doubt it. The ignition leaves the column right away, and anything that would cause problems you would think would blow a fuse. If it is no fuel, then it would start on starting fluid spray. It there is no spark, you could see that with an inductive timing light or spare spark plug (don't hold a plug wire by hand or allow the arc to jump too far, by inserting a spare spark plug on the wire you pull off.)

Car not going into park and wont start move gear shift and it will eventually start

It sounds like there is some slight wear in either the cable,(stretched a little), or the linkages themselves. The next time it doeasn't start try putting the car in neutral. If the N lights right up and the car starts then probably the Neutral safety switch is ok. Believe it or not it's one of those problems where if you're right there it's easy to determine but hard ti diagnose over the phone, so to speak. For the sake of argument, the neutral safety switch is probably alot less expensive to try first... Next time you're parked and it won't start try going all the way to low and back to park rather quickly. If it goes right in and starts I would have the linkage adjusted. Good luck
