You can still run heater but need refrigerant when you driving when start raining outside windows and windshield will fog up but you can drive with low refrigerant.but still fix problem.

Heater control valve function


no the heater control valves function is to stop coolant (water) flow through the heater core . there is a cycling switch on the low side a/c line or accumulator drier this cycling is to keep the evaporator from freezing up and it also cycles when system is low on refrigerant .

sounds like maybe your dryer is plugged up .
follow the cold line with your hand .
or its working and the vent flapper is disconnected .
its the one that's tied to the front buttons / lever on front panel.
you should hear it switch between cold an hot as the flap closes opens. it will be definitely heard. it sucks vacuum an plops close/open.
more than likely you have a loose bad vacuum line/lever in dash.

The anser is yes. The refrigerant is in the A/C system which is independant from the heating system.

My car began to blow warm air when ac running. once car sits for 20 minutes begins to blow cold air but for short time


Warm air as in heated air or warm air as in outside temperature?
If it is blowing heated air, then the problem is probably a water control valve that is stuck open. That valve can get gunked up with deposits, and it will fail open if the solenoid fails or its electrical connections corrode. See if the outlet hose(s) is hot when the car is running. That would mean the valve is open. The electrical plug has one always-hot pin, and the heater control provides a ground to close the water valve. On a dual-zone system, the hot pin is the one in the middle. If you attach 12V to that and ground each of the other pins, you should hear the solenoids click shut. If you your getting power to the plug, and you can manually activate the solenoids, but the heater won't close them, then the heater control unit in the dash has failed.
You will find the water control valve attached to the firewall next to the brake master cylinder. It is a bit of a pain to get at. If you have to replace it, be sure to replace all your heater hoses while you are in there. This is NOT a job that you want to repeat next year when a 15-year-old hose fails.
If you are getting outside temperature air, the most likely problem is that you are low on refrigerant. Now all of the do-it-yourself sites warn you to never buy those single-gauge refrigerant recharge kits at the auto parts store because if the A/C has some other problem other than just low refrigerant, you will overfill the system and damage the compressor. My opinion on this is: Most of the time, the problem is just low refrigerant, so you will save a lot of money doing it yourself. If the A/C has a more serious problem, you will damage it worse if you overfill it, but any mechanic who touches a 14-year-old A/C system is going to replace the whole system anyway, so you have lost nothing if you trash it.
If you try recharging it yourself, follow directions carefully and stop adding refrigerant as soon as it runs cold. The e36 A/C system does not like having even a few ounces too much refrigerant, so having just a little too much is as bad as having not enough.

The low refrigerant light comes on and a/c doesn't work. The heaters and defrosters work fine however.


If the refrigerant is low /the coolant is low then AC will not work. But the heater will work.In this case the refrigerant needs to be refilled from car ac service center.Its not advisable to fill the refrigerant manually.So getting it done by a professional is very much advisable. But refilling the refrigerant should solve the problem.If there is no refrigerant leak.At the ac service center,they will confirm this before refilling refrigerant. ---------- Keep updated for any more queries.Thanks.

hi, i have seen this problem before, you might scoff at the answer, but i will do my best to convince you. your vehicle has a low freon level, meaning the charge is low. here's the reason why: your vehicle comes with dual climate control so you can switch tempuratures on both sides, the heater/evaporater box(the part inside the dash that contains the heater core and evaporator core for a/c and heating) has a blend door that splits the air flow in half right down the middle vertically. now, a quick small lesson on refrigerant: refrigerant changes from a gas to a liquid when it enters the evaporator core in your dash, this is how you get cold air, the hot outside air blow across the cold evap core(with the cold liquid refrigerant inside) and it cools the air temp down. liquid, as we all should know, moves the path of least resistance. now, the evaporator core is like a small radiator, with tubes running through it to tranfer refrigerant, but when it gets low, the path the liquid takes is shorter than when full. in essence, only moving through the passenger side of the evap core before returning to the compressor. i found all this out by tearing down the dash thinking there was an issue with one of the blend doors inside. ten hours later, couldn't find a problem. so, i put all back together, and refilled with freon, and all of a sudden, it worked great! both sides! so, the moral is, it pays to take the small easy steps before diagnosing the big stuff. try it, check and top off the system with refrigerant, see if it doesn't fix the problem.

Hi: Its sounds almost like you are Low on R-34 Coolant and being low makes your Compresor to your A/C Cycle Al The Time Its Trying to keep up with the Rest of the A/C System,Causing it also sometimes it will die.You Have a Pressure Sensor that Tells your system when it needs to Run your Compressor to Keep your system running and Cooling Properly.Check or Have your R-34 Frefrigerant Check See if you Need to Recharge Your System.You might whatto let a Garage /Shop do this so they can Vacum your System Down 1st.This Clears all the Air, Refrigerant and Most Commpressor Oil. They will or Should Recharge it with new refrigerant ,Oil, And Bring Your System Back up To Specs.And as Far as it Dying on you off and On. Possibly is really low on R-34 or your Compressor CLUTH is Going Out And Trying to Lock Up. Reasons for lack of cold a/c is low refrigerant. Does compressor engage and spin when a/c turned on??

Reasons for cold air from heater are

Blocked heater cores
Faulty thermostat
Faulty heater controls
Faulty heater tap.

2000 ford taurs a/c dont work it blows cold when i power up the compressor.its running 45 lbs on my gage on the low side.

Perform the following basic Checks and Information
1. Check Drive Belts,If belt is intact proceed to the next step.
2. Check for Compressor Clutch Engagement - Turn the air conditioner to the "on" position and set controls to the coldest setting. Start the engine and allow to idle. Then open the hood and inspect the clutch at the front of the compressor, is it turning? "Engaged" if so, the system has enough refrigerant to activate. If the system is low on refrigerant it will not work properly. In this case an air conditioner recharge kit is needed to recharge the system. If the compressor clutch is not turning proceed to next step.
3. Inspect for Refrigerant Leaks
4. Check under dash panel and under hood power distribution center
5. Check Temperature Control Vents - The vents inside your car are controlled by a cable, electrical servo or vacuum servo. If the vent door is not functioning properly it will cause warm air from the heater to exit the vents. To check this start the car and allow the engine idle, next turn the blower motor speed on low, switch the temperature control from warm to cold while your ear is close to the vents. You should hear the door move inside the heater box as it swings from open to close. If not, inspect for a vacuum leak or a shorted motor in the servo, repair the leak or replace the servo motor.

Low refrigerant prevents the a/c pump from kicking on due to the low pressure switch. i would try to fill with a can of R134 (refrigerant) from the auto parts store. the low pressure switch may have gone...


This is really one area that should be left to the guys with the correct equipment. But, if you want to try putting some gas in there, it goes into the low side (fatter line) (put a temporary jumper on the low pressure switch connector to get the compressor running) Only use freon that dosen't have sealer or dye in it. (it won't help you and can really mess up a shops expensive equipment if it's in there.) The cans with a gauge are inaccurate but better than nothing. If you need more than one can, you probably have a serious leak, so stop there.
