You need haynes repair manual to see photos of camshaft sprocket or crankshaft sprocket timing marks.go any auto parts stores they will have a haynes or chilton repair.you need one because if you set timing chain wrong valves and piston will get damaged.

The timing is not adjustable. You must get the system scanned for codes to diagnose this problem.

2000 pontiac sunfire replaced head gasket now it still wont start, it just backfires

It sounds like a timing issue. Make sure the cam shafts and timing belt are installed correctly. Hopefully you have not belt any valves while trying to start it. Good luck.

Does 1997 pontiac sunfire gt 2.4 L set it's own timing

No, The 2.4lt quad 4 has a timing CHAIN when it starts to get sloppy the chain must be replaced. As these engines have an internal ignition pack under the valve cover ther is no adjustment. Unless you are an acomplished mechanic I don't suggest you takle this on your own.

Does it have a timing chain or a timing belt

Hello.
In 1997 the Sunfire used 2 different engines.
A 2.4 overhead cam or a 2.2 overhead valve engine.
Both use a timing chain setup.
Hope this helps you along.
Best of the season to you.

Pontiac sunfire valve noise

If it's a ticking noise that speeds up with the speed of the engine, it's a worn valve lifter.
You can try tightening it down by taking the valve cover off and tightening the bolt on the rocker arm, but don't tighten it too much, you will end up with other problems.
