SOURCE: 5th. Gear

Sounds like you may have bent a shift fork or your cluster gear has some missing teeth on it now. I would venture to say that is it a bent shift fork. This will require the transmission be removed to gain access to inspect and repair.

SOURCE: I have a new flywheel, starter, and clutch on my

First do not let this problem go for a long time it will destroy the teeth on the flywheel making it necessary to replace the flywheel $$$, the starter is wrong it is not extending far enough forward to fully engage the flywheel teeth, when ordering the new starter make sure they don't give you the same part # in regards to the starter, it is possible that the starter is just defective but if you install the replacement and the same symptom occurs they are giving you the wrong starter. It is also possiblr that a shim was left out during the reassembley of clutch/flywheel/trans.

2003 Lincoln Navigator starter grinding when starting

If you mean the starter grinds from time to time and won't crank the engine when it happens, the problem could be a bad spot on the flywheel and/or a faulty starter. The starter uses a magnet and bendix gear to push the starter gear into the flywheel. If the magnet or bendix is weak, the gear will not engage and can damage the teeth on the flywheel.
You need to have the starter removed and check the flywheel teeth for damage.

Truck is a 4x4 and a 88 Ford Ranger, when you turn the key, the starter will not engage. However, if you ratchet the clitch, sometimes the starter turns over, Is it mechanical or the computer and does...

I know on mine (88 ranger 4x4 manual transfer case and ******, 2.9 v6, short wheel base) it has what seems to me to be something similar to a nuetral safety switch. The starter will not even try to engage unless the clutch is in. You're kind of vague in your description. But if your issue is not getting it to turn over when in nuetral, and not pressing in the clutch I don't think anything is broken, that it is a safety feature from Ford

2000 Chevy s10 manual changed starter still won't start the starter is spinning but the engine won't turn over.

Do you have the correct starter and is it grinding, this sounds like a bad flywheel or wrong starter or even a bad one. look at teeth of flywheel and see if they are damaged. good day

I have a 1996 astro van...when i go to start and turn ignition it makes this real bad grinding sound? could it be the flywheel or the starter ?

It could be either the flywheel or the starter.
If it's grinding, don't try it again until you've removed and examined the starter and flywheel. If the starter solenoid isn't fully engaging the bendix, it will cause the gear to grind; replace or rebuild the starter if that's the case.
But you should examine the flywheel to see if it is seriously damaged from the problems you've had. Put a mark on the flywheel using a magic marker, then examine the flywheel as you slowly turn the engine by hand. (make certain that the ignition is off when you do that, you don't want anything bad to happen to your hand.) The mark on the flywheel will indicate when you've been able to examine the all of the teeth on the starter ring.

Engine wont turn over their is a grinding sound when the key is turned on

starter or starter selinoid is the problem. Either the gear on the starter is worn or you might have a bad spot on the flywheel. Only other thing that it could be is the starter selinoid is not funtioning properly. Bottom line, you need a new starter or a new flywheel. But I would make sure that the 2 bolts that hold the starter in place are tight firstly.

Need advice please

Bleed right side first...open valve on caliper and have someone step gently down on brake. close bleeder. repeat till no air comes out. Repeat on drivers side. Keep master cyl full while doing this.
Grinding noise can come from bad starter drive gear, bad flywheel teeth or misaligned starter. You have to check this...I can't see that far!!! Best way to see flywheel teeth is to remove starter and turn engine by hand while looking into starter hole.

Grinding noise when trying to start car.

hello first thing you need to do is take your starter out the starter drive gear either has busted teeth or the flywheel does with the starter removed mark the flywheel with chalk crayon so you no were you started from look at the teeth good keep turning the motor by hand checking till you come back to the original mark you made if there are no chips or missing teeth look at the look at the starter drive teeth there most likely busted or chewed down replace the starter goodluck please rate

Flywheel area, possibly transmission

the noise might be from a loose bendix on the starter,
the bendix is a little gear in fron of the starter see if there is any visual point to see it nad make sure it keeps away from the flywheel if not have the starter repalced, this bendix have a spring to keep it away from the flywheel also with a flash ligh try to see the closes you can to the center of flywheel sometimes they get crack where they atached to the engine,
and on the shifting might be a bad transmission or the shifter has to be inspected for your mechanic
