SOURCE: fuel

first things first...NEVER use ether in a gasoline engine! you can blow the cam and crank seals, and even the head gasket! Ether is like **** to any engine, and once you start using it, the engine becomes addicted to it, because the computer and sensors will become programmed to the excessive combustion temperatures and pressures. That is probably what has happened, one or more sensors are probably screwed up, namely the mass air flow sensor.

Check fuel pressure, had this problem a year ago, bet the fuel pump is gone you should be able to hear the pump come on when you turn the key forward. You should hear it hum if not its dead, costly repair the pump, regulator and filt is all one unit.

well you narrowed it down to a fuel problem. not sure about your model, but most cars have a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail to reduce un needed pressures. that could possibly be bad. its cylinder in shape and has a vacuum hose connected to it. check the hose and that unit.

Wont start unless sprayed with starting fluid

I am going to assume ( dangerous) that you have a diesel. If the grid heater is working it is not advisable to use starting fluid because it can combust in the intake manifold. However, if the intake heater was working, you will not have any starting problems above 0F. I would check your grid heater for power and continuity. There could be a fuel delivery issue, but starting fluid usually does not fix that.

fuel filter, fuel pump sonds like it is not getting fuel. Because when you spray starter fluid in it, it started and ran on what little bit of starter fluid you sprayed it with.

2003 Dodge Stratus will not start

It's all process of elimination. Since you checked fuses, first thing I would do is spray some starting fluid in the intake hose to see if the engine starts for a few seconds. If it does you know it's fuel related. Meaning not getting fuel for any reason. You replaced the pump, but perhaps the pump is not getting power... or the fuel pressure regulator is bad, or the filter is clogged. If the engine DOES NOT start when spraying starting fluid in the intake, then you know it's ignition or ECU related. Start there and report back to us.

1997 dodge 3.5 fast idle can not slow it down. at start running about 2.5rpms. i can drive down the street at 35mph without touching the gas pedal.

Sounds like a vaccuum, or gasket leak. Easiest way to diagnose is to get a can of starting fluid and spay it around any vacuum hoses and intake area while it's running. Be careful! Starting fluid is extremely flammable!

If you notice an acceleration, or de-celeration while spraying the starting fluid, you should be able to pinpoint the leak.
