I have an lpg hyundai sonata 2002 model. recently, i have my radiator overhauled. Now the problem lies on my transmission. It shifts only up to 3rd gear and struck on the same gear even when i slowed down or stop. it also does not shift up to 4th gear. The first guy is right first the shift cable has to be set correctly if they did not replace it after overhauling the transmission the cable is stretched out to far to be adjusted so it will have to be replaced, and some had a shift modulator valve located on the side of the transmission if it went bad it would shift crazy there will be a vacuum tube going to it. it can be pulled off and you can **** on the end of the modulator valve if you can develop suction it's ok if not replace it. there is also a screw adjustment inside the modulator valve so you can adjust it to shift right you have to turn the screw in to increase rpm shift change. If you need more help let me know by posting to this answer and rate if this was helpful.

2002 hyundai sonata lx will not shift gears automatically but will manually

Huyndai's are netorious for transmissions doing funny things if the Throttle Possition Sensor is bad. Not an expensive part that you could probably change yourself. It is an inexpensive try, if it does not remedy the situation. Also, the computers regulate shift patterns. You might unhook the battery and leave it unhooked for 30 min. or so, and see if it will re-learn shift points.

2004 Hyundai Sonata automatic transmission downshifting while at a maintained speed.

I have one that does exactly this. I have confirmed no codes in trans or engine; I have watched the data on the scan tool and it appears that the PCM is choosing to shift without a change in throttle or speed to cause it. I am looking into a new PCM - ouch!

Will not move in rverse

Hyundai Sonata transmissions were much less than reliable. In most cases, the symptoms you describe are caused by an internal transmission failure that will require an overhaul or replacement. To be sure, however, you should check the shift cable and the adjustment and operation of the inhibitor switch. If that's good, you can pretty much draw the conclusion that you're looking at expensive repairs.

Cost will vary greatly by geographic location and the shop where you have the vehicle repaired. You'd be best served by calling a few places to see what they'd charge to overhaul or replace the transmission with one that's already been remanufactured. Be sure to call your local Hyundai dealer also. Hyundai prices their remanufactured transmissions very competetively, so many dealers sell them for less than Hyundai's list price.

I hope helps with this; keep us updated (remember to rate this).

3rd gear help please!

I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata and I had the same problem. But mine would always shift into 3rd gear and STAY there until I turned the car off. I took it to a Hyundai dealer and he had to rewire a speed sensor on top of the transmission. Apparently a little animal got up in that tight little spot and gnawed on my sensor wires. The car has run fine since. To make a long story short, it might be your speed sensor on your transmission.
