check for leaks in exhaust ahead of converter, check cap and rotor for tracking between contacts, code check for fuel and other faults.

The backfiring on deceleration is typically associated with a loose timing chain.
If you put a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt, turn the balancer gently until you feel the chain tighten, then rotate the opposite way until it tightens, how far does is move.
If it goes more than an inch, it is getting sloppy. If it moves closer to 2 inches, it is worn out.
