Question about 1985 Toyota MR2

1985 Toyota MR2 low oil pressure.

I bought a 1985 Toyota MR2 recently from a friend, with 118,000 miles, rebuilt engine, documents on all servicing, the works. I've noticed that instead of being in the middle, the oil pressure likes to stay low, and only raises to the "normal" level when I really accelerate hard & am driving spiritedly. Any advice on what this could be? It's also due for an oil change in a few miles if that helps.

You could replace electrical oil pressure gauge,
that might give you a more accurate oil press reading

Toyota MR2 spyder engine failure

when an engine overheats that bad , the cost to rebuild is generally close to a fully reconditioned exchange engine
check the wreckers / junk yards for a good engine of the same family group as is on the compliance plate /build plate on your car ( many such places import engines with low miles/klm that are in top condition
the rebuild will include new head or head rework , new pistons and rings , bearings , engine re-bore and all of that will not include the labour charges
burning a motor is not an inexpensive experience and that is why I suggest a second hand motor or a service exchange motor for an accredited engine reconditioning shop

I have a 1991 Mr2 5sfe N/A i have a shop puting in used 3sfe engines and one rebuilt one 5sfe all of them end up with a rod knocking problem with less than 2000 miles on them with this last one the oil...

sure sounds like an oil problem to me. if they are not torquing the piston rods appropriately, you could have one loose enough to allow oil pressure drop, and then all kinds of bad things happen. I would get an oil pressure gauge installed on your next engine, so that you know if the pressure is too low. Other than that, you may just be extremely unlucky. Also, are they replacing the entire engine or just the short block?

Well, if the oil light was coming on I would suspect the oil pump or the piston rods were not properly tightened down. Are they replacing the oil pump with every engine?

Fuel pump not geting power

usually the oil pressure switch is connected with the fuel system if this is bad it tells the ecm not to power the fuel pump because it thinks the engine has low or no oil in it.

2002 corolla (now 91000 miles) makes rattling sound

Thats good that you are getting a second opinion. A Toyota dealer will be able to check it and see what the noise may be. See what they come up with. I dont think a worn timing chain or guides would cause a low oil pressure problem. But, if it does indeed have low oil pressure, that is a serious problem.

low pressure in the tranny, did you check the oil level in park? if so you might have to check it in gear with someone holding it on the brakes, then re-check... hopefully it isn;t the pressure solenoid.... $$$$$$.... they can be expensive, cheers!
