Question about 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Open Question

I have a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 v8. when it is in park or idling at a stop light it is skipping or spuddering. My check engine light is on ans when scanned it said spark plugs 1 and 5 were misfiring. we changed both plugs and wires and also changed the coil pack. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions?

you may have a bad coil---take a pair of rubber handle plyers & remove the spark plug wires 1 at a time---when you pull off a plug wire you should notic the truck runs even worse---the one you pull off & it doesnt change the way it runs--that is the cylinder that has the problem

SOURCE: How do you access the spark plugs 2002 mercury mountaineer

IIRC these are a coil over design. meaning the coil is over the plug. the coil should have one 8mm bolt holding it on the lower intake manifold. remove the coild to get to the spark plugs. look by the fuel injectors, coil should be just next to it or very close. coil usually says motorcraft on it and circle in design.

good luck

youll need to check the vacuum lines on the 4.6 engine in the back where the pcv valve is look when running , the engine is the pcv hose collapse? is there any vacuum hose leaking at idle, this will cause a lean misfire upon accleration. okay no vacuum leak let the vehicle cool off.when this vehicle is cool you are going to run a test you can do this you did a tune up. start the engine test the EGR the top of the valve. does it get hot? feel for it . does it get warm. I mean like it get hotish. this valve can be stuck open. okay , do this on the EGR is a hose pull it off does the idle from rough go away? if it does this is the problem. You did everything right you need to solve for vacuum leak use your ears

I have a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer that runs perfect while in park or while driving. When stopped or put in reverse it shakes and stalls.

Is the check engine light on? Mountaineers are bad about developing vacuum leaks which will lean the engine out and cause it to stumble at idle while in gear. Check for p0171 and p0174 codes.

My 1999 mercury mountaineer v-6 skips when accelerating

I'm not sure what you mean by skips, it could be a cylinder missfire, it could be a bad coil or ignition wire
