Vw bug chugs at start up and smell gas

Car was running fine, occasionally made grinding noise at start up. Ran fine when I got home. Turned it back on about an hour later and wouldn't turn over at all. No lights, etc. Thought it was a battery problem. Left car alone for about an hour went and restarted and started but chugged like it was out of fuel and the engine finally turned over and started. Chugs bad now and can smell gas BAD the whole time the car is running. Help!

Light's came on due to your alternator is defective, it's not putting out voltage any more and will have to be replace, the reason it started later, is your battery recharge itself, engine will only run till battery get low on voltage again, have the charging system check out, hope this was very helpful.

Is the serpentine belt still intact? The grinding noise maybe the water pump which would account for the overheating.

The regulator will have either an O-ring seal or a regular gasket seal. Probably where the gas smell came from all along. Certain conditions may cause it to leak more than normal, but the seal should be replaced. It would be a good time to have your fuel pressure tested, just to see if you need a new pressure regulator as well. Not likely, but it's the right time to check-it will have to be removed to replace the gasket or O-ring on it.
A fuel line leak can contribute to hard starting.
As for any noise or about the transmission, just check your fluid after the car has reached normal operating temperature. If the fluid is at the full mark, and is a nice clear red, nothing else you can do- it will sort itself out. If the fluid is a dark brown, like dirty red, you could try a fluid and transmission filter change. Sometimes helps, sometimes not. Good luck.

check the alternator and wiring to battery. if belt is ok. then when car is off, voltage at battery should be at least 12.6 or better. when it is running, at battery should be at least 14.1 to 14.7. jump start car, try this, with car running, remove negative battery cable car should still run, if alternator is ok. if it quits when taking cable off,of battery. its the alternator thats bad. but if it run ok with cable off. then its your battery.

When th vehicle chugs, does the vehicle emit a white cloud of exhaust that smells sweet? If it does it may be a headgasket/cracked head. The only way a fuel filter could be a problem would be if it leaked or was plugged as they cannot cause a vapor problem with that system.

Bad sounds, bad smells from 94 ford explorer

Sounds like you may have a vacuum line off or ruptured going to the EGR valve. The burning smell is probably the catalytic converter. When the engine runs rich you will get a sulfur smell that smells sort of like rotten eggs.
