Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

Open Question

97 VW GOLF MAN 2.0. Flywheel?Engine?who knows what else? NEED HELP!!

I have a 97 VW Golf, Man 2.0. Just replaced the ****** last week, DIY, and now there is a high pitch whining when driving over 40, hard to put into gear, esp reverse when its cold, and when gas is applied while in gear it dies, and now wont disengage fully from gear. Today, it wouldnt turn over at first, then would turn over and ANY gas applied would kill it. I have a cold air filter in it and I know that when that shifts the MAS is affected so it wont run. That however was not the case, the filter is fully connected right now. I was told part of it could be the flywheel needing to be resurfaced, which explains the whining and gear shifting issue, but I am open for other ideas. When the snow started it wouldnt turn over at all and just killed my battery. I know I need a new muffler and other cosmetic things done, but the not starting or running when gas is applied, not fully disengaging out of gear now, and all the other problems have me boggled. Any help would be awesome. I am ready to torch it! :(
