i had to do this to my wifes 99 cougar. if you're not a lil car savvy, then your best bet is take it to a mechanic. I found the instructions, on autozones website. 1st you gotta take off front passenger tire, remove the whole assembly including the half shaft. (this car is really a pain to work on) Thats not even all of it, thats just to see the alternator from underneath. I got everything except that damn last bolt holding the alternator in, so i had to put it back together, get it towed to a friends shop and let him finish it for me. So far I hate working on this car, if its not something above the motor, then its a pain cuz they decided to put that big *** 2.5 motor in the small *** car!! But if you really want to do it yourself, I recommend autozone, they have detailed info on how to do it, plus some tools, you need to rent if you don't have em already!! Good luck, you'll definately need it!!

There are 3 bolts. You'll need a LOT of socket extensions and a car hoist!
and a lot of time and patients.
But an even better idea is to just check the wire connections make sure they are well connected and no gaps on the female connectors if you suspect a bad alt.

Jack up the right rear side of the, the fuel filter is behind the right rear tire toward the front side of the fuel tank. You will need a special fuel line clip release tool to get the line off.
