What does this mean? u have a electric air pump that pumps fresh air into the exhaust system during cold start, this reduces exhaust emissions, that pump is defective, replace it.

SOURCE: p1133 on a 2002 saturn sc2 1.9L

Hi thee:
Check this possible causes:
- Air leaks present in the exhaust manifold or the exhaust pipes
- Fuel pressure is too high (i.e., causing a rich air fuel mixture)
- HO2S may be contaminated (due to improper fuel or silicone)
- HO2S signal high or low reference circuit has high resistance
- HO2S heater element has failed, or the heater circuit is open
- PCM has failed

Test wires and harnesses. Hope helps.

Hi, I have a 1999 Saturn SC2 and my service engine light came on. I did a diagnostic on it and the code showed P1133. The guy at the auto shop told me it's an oxygen sensor, but didn't know if it was the...

First, I wouldn't let that guy work on your car. P1133 is "O2 Sensor Slow Response - Sensor 1" Anybody that has been in the auto repair business for more than a week should know that Sensor 1 is ALLWAYS the FRONT sensor.

Note: O2 sensor codes do not necessarily mean that an O2 sensor needs to be replaced. Most O2 Sensor codes are caused by something other than the O2 Sensor itself. (there are several different possible O2 Sensor codes for your car. P0131, P0132, P0133, P0134, P0138, P0171, P0172, P1133, P1134)

The most likely cause of DTC (Diagnostic TroubleCode) P1133 is contamination of the O2 Sensor. Replacing a contaminated O2 Sensor without repairing the source of the contamination will only result in a repeat repair. It could be caused by bad fuel, improper use of RTV sealant, engine oil or engine coolant. I have seen this caused many times by engine oil leaks that run down the exhaust and clog the holes in the side of the sensor shield. (The sensor must "breathe" to work properly)

Then on the other hand, if your vehicle has a lot of miles on it, the sensor could be just chemically worn out. In any case, the FRONT sensor is the one that is setting the code.

What is code p1133

Circuit Description
The powertrain control module (PCM)/engine control module (ECM) constantly monitors the oxygen sensor (O2S 1) activity for 100 seconds . During the monitor period, the PCM/ECM counts the number of times that the O2S 1 switches from rich to lean and from lean to rich. With this information, a total for all switches can be determined. If the number of switches is too low, DTC P1133 will set. The lean-to-rich and the rich-to-lean are greater than 18 switches.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
  • DTCs P0106, P0107, P0108, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0131, P0132, P0134, P0171, P0172, P0201, P0202, P0203, P0204, P0300, P0336, P0337, P0351, P0352, P0402, P0404, P0405, P0406, P0443, P0506, P0507, P1130, P1404 and P1627 not set.
  • Engine is operating in closed loop.
  • Purge D.C. is greater than 0%
  • Engine coolant temperature (ECT) is above 72 °C (162 °F) .
  • The engine has been operating for at least 120 seconds .
  • Calculated airflow is between 9 and 42 grams/sec .
  • Canister purge duty cycle is greater than 2%.
  • Engine speed is between 1600 rpm and 4000 rpm .
  • 0 second delay after conditions are met.
  • Airflow is between 7 and 40 g/sec .
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
  • The PCM/ECM will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
  • Open loop fuel control will be in effect.
  • The PCM/ECM will store conditions which were present when the DTC was set as Freeze Frame and in the Failure Records data.
  • A history DTC is stored.
  • Coolant fan turns on.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
  • The PCM/ECM will turn the MIL off on the third consecutive trip cycle during which the diagnostic has been run and the fault condition is no longer present.
  • A history DTC P1134 will clear after 80 consecutive warm-up cycles have occurred without a fault.
  • DTC P1133 can be cleared by using the scan tool CLEAR INFO function or by disconnecting the PCM/ECM battery feed.
Diagnostic Aids
DTC P1133 is most likely caused by one of the following items:
  • Fuel Pressure - The system will go rich if the fuel pressure is too high. The PCM/ECM can compensate for some increase. However, if it gets too high, a DTC P1133 may set. Refer to "Fuel System Diagnosis".
  • Leaking injector - A leaking or malfunctioning injector can cause the system to go rich.
  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor - An output that causes the PCM/ECM to sense a higher than normal manifold pressure (low vacuum) can cause the system to go rich. Disconnecting the MAP sensor will allow the PCM/ECM to set a fixed value for the MAP sensor. Substitute a different MAP sensor if the rich condition is gone while the sensor is disconnected.
  • Pressure regulator - Check for a leaking fuel pressure regulator diaphragm by checking for the presence of liquid fuel in the vacuum line to the pressure regulator.
  • Throttle Position (TP) sensor - An intermittent TP sensor output can cause the system to go rich due to a false indication of the engine accelerating.
  • O2S 1 contamination - Inspect O2S 1 for silicone contamination from fuel or improper use of RTV sealant. The sensor may have a white powdery coating and result in a high but false voltage signal (rich exhaust indication). The PCM/ECM will then reduce the amount of fuel delivered to the engine causing a severe surge or driveability problem.

Your going to have to get the car scanned for the DTC codes, Auto Zone and most repair shops can scan for the DTC codes but note Auto Zone scan free of charge. The DTC code will indicate the issues than needs to be addressed to get your car running 100% again. It cold be as simple as a dirty fuel filter and will need to be replaced, Note and dirty fuel filter will make the fuel pump work harder cause it to have a shorter life and the fuel pressure may be getting too low now for the fuel injectors to work properly. Have the car scanned for the DTC codes and replace the fuel filter which is recommend every 15,000 miles or once a year. Good luck and keep me posted.

Electronic power steering

It could be the electronic power steeirng module . With the gauges dropping out like that , the module could be bring down the data bus . Don't know how much you know about automotive electronic's an how the insturment cluster know's what speed to set speedo at an how full fuel gauge is an rpm on the tach .
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM). The ECM/PCM calculates the vehicle speed based on the class 2 message indicating the wheel reference speed from the electronic brake control module (EBCM) if:
• The ECM/PCM detects a malfunction in the vehicle speed sensor circuit.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the ECM/PCM.
The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) if the IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with both the ECM/PCM.

012 GM Class II Communications

Checking the vehicle modules for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes is the first place to start .
The Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) receives a class 2 vehicle speed message from the Engine Control Module (ECM) via a class 2 serial data circuit. The PSCM uses this vehicle speed message, and other inputs, to determine the desired amount of steering assist.
