Question about 2003 Jeep Liberty

1 Answer

Jeep Liberty 2003

My daughter rear ended another car while I was on holidays. Now the transmission seems to be slipping. The car is making a clunking sound when I put it in full time 4 wheel drive and when I try to put it in reverse, it only drive a few feet and then stops. My husband says it needs transmission fluid, but I don't know how to check it. It seems to me that I am supposed to leave it running while I check it, is that correct?

If your low on trans fluid you have a leak the accident caused you might of cracked the transfer case loosing fluid put paper on the ground under the car by the trans and see where the leak is . then put fluid in it and take it to a trans shop so they can put it on a lift for further inspection. or take to a good mech that you know

When coming to a stop, then moving my foot from the brake to the accellerator, there is a clunk sound from the rear which feels like the rearend catching up with the transmission. This is in a 2002 Jeep...

Sounds like you may have a bad universal joint on the driveshaft. It is possible though that you have excessive lash in the differential gearset or in the transfer case. Check the joints first...that's the most common problem.
Check with both rear wheels off the ground and the transmission in neutral so the driveshaft is not in tension.

Back tires on 2003 liberty stick and make clunking

You should service your brakes, sounds like they are sticking over night , are they disc or drum? Do you use your emergency cable? More than likely a service will work to free all parts up if you do use your emergency possible the cables are getting sticky too

The transmission seems to hesitate or slip at 35/40 mph before shifting?

Common on the Jeep Liberty, make sure you do a trans. service and use the proper transmission fluid.

Clunking in rear end Jeep Liberty 3.7 automatic

Nearly impossible to tell you what it is without actually hearing and seeing it. I recommend that you check the rear universal joint, pinion bearing and wheel bearing assemblies for looseness. If it's that loud it shouldn't be too hard to find.
Good luck!!! If you need help doing the repair or have other questions just ask!!!
