Check the battery cable for corrosion and have the battery tested, if both are ok you may have an ignition starter switch problem. Have a shop confrim this guess.

SOURCE: try to start car and nothing happens. replaced

Do the dash lights come on ? They should come on when the key is turned to the on position. If nothing happens check the engine relay. It is not too expensive to replace if you really want to eliminate that as the problem. Check all wires going to the starter and make sure it is wired correctly.

SOURCE: Lexus SC300 95 Several tries before starting.

Had the same problem. In my case, it was the battery cable ends that needed replacing. Car works fine now.

Bad or loose intermittent wire connections to and from sensors. Some unauthorised mechanic has been working on the car? Take it back and talk to the service manager, or the shop owner.

I'm not sure about the Polo but on the Golf it's on the bottom of the dashboard directly in front of the driver's left knee.

Yes the key needs to be reprogramed to the car. Unfortunately that will have to be done by the dealer. Make sure that you have plenty of proof that you are the owner. They will reprogram it but you will not take posession of the car until you prove it is yours.
