Air Inj. Sys., Bank 2 Flow too low and one Warm Up Catalyst: Bank 2: Efficiency Below Threshold. The MIL light kept coming on and we took it to the dealer, battery first time, 2 plug wires the second and fuel evaporator last time. Each time it got better and then came back again. I got the VAG software to check it myself and started getting multiple misfires. Through different elimination processes I ended up changing the plugs, plug wires and ignition coil. It kept coming back. Now I got the other codes P0431 and P1411 along with the misfires still. I logged some readings of the cyl misfires and oxy sen to see if the sensors are bad or if the catalylic converter is bad. How can I tell where the problem lies.

Sorry for that code in the begining of my description, (cut & paste)
I have already changed the plugs, plug wires, ignition coil, air filter. I have tried swapping known good ones with misfiring ones and they are OK. Can the misfires be caused by the Cats or do I move toward the injectors. I logged the Vag-Com readings for the misfiring cyl & oxy sensors and found when the engine is above 2000 rpm both the oxy sensors blank out to 0.00, is this normal or is that showing a problem? Thanks for any feedback.

Where is the airmass meter, is that the sensor in front of the air filter exhaust duct. I didnt change it but if you think its worth a try I will.

That souns like an airflow meter problem, you will need to sort the misfire out first as this will cause all sorts of fuelling issues, the secondary air flow is from the cold start pump but will only effect the emissions when cold.effiency below threshold could be the cat or rear lambda but pointless doing any further diagnostics untill the misfire has gone, check the air mass in measuring blocks or advanced measuring blocks this should give you actual and specified limits if its

them readings mean they are looking for fuel.changing the air filter is not the airmass meter or have you changed it ?

  • colin white Jan 03, 2009

i think thats your problem.we do loooooads of them but dont get a cheap chinese effort they are very poor quality and wont last 5mins,a/f meter connect to the air filterbox, did you check it with, you can also look at your fuel trims channel 32 i think this will give you a very good indication of your fuelling i/e -10% to much fuel being added or 15% not enough fuel being added if you have cleared the codes though the chances are they will be 0.0

try it and let me know how you get on....but they do give serious problems.

2003 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab- diagnostics checked and got these codes- P0171, P0174, P0300, P0316. Can you tell me what they mean?

P0171------ system too lean bank#1
Po174------ system too lean bank#2
For these 2 codes, try cleaning the maf sensor (mass air flow), that is mounted in the big black hose that goes from the air filter housing to the throttle plate, if it is dirty, that will cause those 02 sensors to send a signal to the computor to lean the air fuel mixture. If cleaning it doesn't work, the sensors will probably need changing.
P0300---- Random/multiple cylinder misfire
P0316---- Cylinder misfire at start up---- first 100 revolutions.
On those 2 codes, you have to do some testing to find out why there is a misfire.
Possible causes:
dirty/malfunctioning injectors
weak coil pack
fowling spark plugs/wires
Low fuel pressure

Usualy this happens when you have vacuum leak after air flow meter , bad flow meter or temperature sensor.Actually for this problem I would take car to mechanic shop.

Multiple misfires and timing over retarded can be a result of the MAF dirty or failing. I would suggest carefully cleaning it with a good carb cleaner (Berrymans Chemtool), erasing codes, then take for a drive. If that doesn't do it, get a new one.
It's a "throw parts at it" technique, but a new MAF is much cheaper than a timing chain, and timing chains are not as problematic as MAF's. Plus, the computer tries to compensate for a failing MAF by changing timing. And a MAF will cause engine misfires because it is not measuring the air flow correctly.

Sounds like it may be running a bit lean - do basic checks for air leaks in the induction system (such as leaking manifold gasket, loose hose fittings to air flow sensor etc).
Condition of HT leads also worth a check.
