A/T switch not working

My Nissan terrano 1992 won't change to A/T or power. IT seems to only work in hold. How is this fixed? I have been told it could be a vacuum seal problem, and that the gear box may need to be pulled apart and it would cost a heap to fix, but this was a guess. I thought maybe there is just a trick to using it properly, as I have no drivers manual. I can be hopeful any way. This is my first 4wd and first diesel, so any help is appreciated

I would think this is a failed gearbox.

gearbox works beautiful. Very smooth through all the gears. No problems with the overdrive button either. Just the A/T switch not working. When we switch it to A/T it won't changed gears anymore. Only works in Hold position.

If you are going for the flush where you run a chemical through the system and then change the filter and gasket, use something called Seafoam. You can get this stuff at most autoparts stores. It is some of the best for this kind of issue. Follow the instructions on the can and this should lead to a fix.

Welcome to Fixya

The relay is loacted in the fusebox. It is clearly labeled along with the fuses. Relays are large and usually black. To test it, have someone press the window switch with the engine off you should hear it click. If it clicks its working, if not then you need to replace it.

Thank you for using Fixya!

2003 Nissan Terrano 4X4 won't start in the cold.

Make sure your battery connectors are clean it does not take much corrosion to stop the full current being available. Generally the more plates the better but I am assuming you are getting a decent battery, most carry 3 year warranty and many have the sight glass indicator if it is green the battery is good if it is black get another under warranty.

My 1992 nissan terrano engine wont turn off when I turn the key, only when I put the hand brake up and down

Where do these electrical gremlins come from? Simple logic would say the ignition switch is bad if it won't turn the engine off, but why the hand brake would affect it, I don't know! This may be something you would want the dealership to look at, or someone familiar with the Terrano's electricals. Good luck. When you find the problem, I hope you post it here.

Hi there, i just had my engine manifold pipes welded as there was a leak. It is a 1992 Nissan Terrano. Since this has been done the engine surges and is getting worse by the day. What could it be?

the heat may have damaged a sensor or they may have accidentally melted a wire or disconnected a sensor. look for these simple fixes first if it all started right after the welding work was done.

Terrano gearbox keeps jumping out of overdrive and

Nissan Terrano's have an Electronic Computer that controls the gearbox. It is hidden behind the left hand rear Speaker box, right hard up against the rear seat back rest. This system controls all functions regarding the gearbox and it's rev rates. If your vehicle is shifting back on long drives then it is possible that the computer sees any slight increase in revs as a desire to "Kickback" the gearbox to a lower gearing, hence it dropping out of overdrive. Unfortunately a gearbox specialist with a computer "Plug-in" is needed to fix this, but it is fixable. This problem should not be too expensive in comparison with a new gearbox.

Check transmission fluid after driving for a while, this could be down a bit. If 4 wheel drive, make sure it's in 2H.
