My car makes tapping noises when you start it goes a few blocks then stops running wait a while start it up and it does it again

Noise from the top or bottom. Top end doesn't usually kill the engine, but the bottom end noise will. Year make and model helps. If it is old and high miles. Time for another engine if it is worth it.

1998 olds cutless there is a knocing noise when it is running, when i accelerate it does not get any gusto. feels like it is not shifting please give me your thoughts

check the engine mounts are good and not torn off the mount plate.. Remove each plug lead in turn and if the noise goes then it will be either piston slap or big end bearing. Have a pressure test done on the box to check for internal damage and change the transmission oil and filter and have the bands and clutch pack adjustment checked.

When you start the engine the clutch shaft into the gear box is spinning with the engine crankshaft. When you depress the clutch the noise stops because the input shaft is not turning. It points to a failing bearing on the clutch input shaft and if that proves to be the case then the box has to come out and be pulled down for the bearing to be replaced.

My neighbor's 1998 Cavalier is making a strange noise. It has automatic transmission, new tires, and 155,000 miles. When idling at a stop, it sounds fine, but when it starts movig and hits 15 or 20 mph...

Try getting on an open road, get up to about 45 MPH or where ever the noise is loudest. Put the car in neutral and turn the engine off. You can roll in a straight line for a long time. Make sure nodody is around you. If the sound stops when the engine is off, then the noise is coming from the motor. If the sound is still there, its got to be coming from the tires. Id guess a wheel bearing.

Should You use Straight 40 weight oil instead of 10w 30 ? or is this guy just hididng a problem ?

i wouldnt use straight 40 weight, sounds like hes hiding a rod knocing problem from you also... if you put straight 40 weight in your vehicle, you better have a good battery charger to boost the cranking amps on cold mornings. hope this helps. you usually only use a heavy weight oil if your trying to get rid of something, and need to make the engine run quiet to get rid of it.
