Question about 1998 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

Temperature guage drops in our 1998 Sunfire when acceleration occurs - any ideas why?

We have replaced the temperature sensors, and the "check engine" does not come on. It also runs a little rough. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: location of the coolant temperature sensor

You will find this sensor where the fat hos comes from the radiator and conects to the engine block. It would be on the housing where the thermostat is located. If it is not there you should look for a sensor that has a wire connected to it anywhere on the engine block where a water inlet is located. I hope this helps. Don't forget to rate my answer, thanks.

Do you know if the plugs were changed, a bad or broken plug will also cause rough idle and slow acceleration?

Could be bad sensor that fails when warmed up. Try disconnecting while cold so you know you have the correct one, warm up until fails (test hooking up briefly) and once failed short sensor wire to ground to see if gauge comes up. If so, replace sensor.

Thats odd
If your idling for 5 minutes or more it could be a stuck thermostat that later corrects itself and in rare cases could be a poor pumping water pump. To check pump disconnect heater hose and rev engine coolant should pump out as fast as a water hose. Catch in a bucket if you can and put back in radiator.
If your just starting and going it coiuld be a failing sensor so in that case I would change the sensor they are easy and usually not to expensive.

1998 Kia Sportage. Temperature gauge is not working.Any ideas on what could be causing this.

If it is the only guage that doesn't work at all, i would check every sensor wire connection, then the wire itself (purhaps insulation rubbed off or melted) as these sensors use return voltage.

Inspect the IAT sensor and wiring. The sensor is located in the air induction tube near the air filter. I've seen these wires break at the connector.

This may been an ignition module or a MAF sensor, this car may need to be diagnosed using a OBD I computer code reader to accurately diagnose the problem.

Coolant wiring

Ensure you are checking the right sensor.
The coolant level sensor is usually located in the coolant resevoir. It generally performs a hi/lo monitor switch function.
The coolant temperature sensor is usually located on the motor (cylinder head or thereabouts). It is a variable resistor dependant on coolant temperature.
As a quick check to identify the sensor, with engine running, short the sensor to ground. If it's the temp gauge sensor the gauge will go max high. Open circuit connection = temp low.

The temperature sensor is located in front of the radiator on the passenger side. Replacements cost approx $25.00.
